Do you know of a good product to help remove carpet glue?

We have hardwood floor under carpet in the hall and would like to know best way to remove glue without damaging wood.

Update:

Yup it's glue... in a long yellow line running down each side of hall near the staples.

Are you SURE the carpet was glued? It's not normally installed that way. It may be carpet padding stuck to the floor. Try hot water with a bit of TSP (found in paint dept. of home centers and hardware stores) or even Windex, 409, etc., let it soak a bit and see of it comes up. If it IS glue then anything that will remove the glue will probably remove the floor varnish and the wood will have to be refinished.

You could try a heat gun to carefully soften the glue line without bubbling the floor finish and use a scraper to gently remove as much glue as you can. Use Goof-Off or mineral spirits to remove the residue.
