I don't know how long a flight your dad will have but adding a few more hours riding the bus is not nice. Treat for a taxi.

from laguardia airport hop on the m60 bus which will take you into manhattan. take the bus to lenox av and 125 st or simply just ask the driver where to catch the number 2 or 3 train. when you arrive at the train station, youll take the 2 or 3 train heading downtown and then get of at 34th st penn station. and viola youve reached your destination
