What are my chances of having twins if my grandma on my mother's side was a twin?

My grandma on my mom's side was a twin. Her twin died at 18 months, I'm not sure what she died from but my mom said it would have been preventalble today with a common vaccine. Anyways, I was wondering what the chances of my sister or me having twins? Any links on info would be great. Thanks! :)

Well, good luck as the trait is passed through the female. It doesn't necessarily skip a generation though, it's random but it does increase your chances of twins with it in the family.

Source(s): I am a fraternal twin, my mother is a mirror twin, my great grandmother was a triplet with a set of twins also for siblings.

It depends. If they were identical twins, then your chances are not any higher than someone who doesn't have twins in their family, but if they were fraternal, that's another story. The instance of fraternal twins tends to run in families, usually skipping generations. The releasing of more than one fertile egg by the ovaries can be a hereditary thing. However, the instance of an egg splitting is one of chance and does not run in families.

So, if they were fraternal, you do have a higher chance of conceiving twins, but if they were identical, your chance is a good as anyone else's chance.

If they were fraternal twins, you have greater chance of having twins. As fraternal twins are genetic (identical are just spontaneous) through the women of the family.

the genetics usually jumps a generation so if your mother did not have twins than your chances are 50/50
