What is the longest rain delay in MLB history?

There are several factors here : Delay and the game never started. Delay during a game started and not restated. Delay during a game and the game restarted.

There was a White Sox home game on a Sunday (1:05 pm start time) in the early 1990s -- I'm thinking 1990 or '91 -- and since the lineup cards had not yet been turned in, the home team was in charge of the rain delay (responsibility passes to the umpire crew once they have the lineup cards). So the White Sox let the rain fall, and fall, and fall -- fans left -- finally gave up after eight hours.

Since the game was never played, this delay is not on the books.

Ah, here we are -- Sunday, 12-August-1990, Rangers at White Sox -- never played, 7 1/2 hours delayed. (Link goes to one factual line, no details. Someone interested could probably search the Chicago Tribune archive or something.)

There are no official records of rain delays. However, some people at SABR have been collecting info on them. There have been a few that have gone longer than the Yankees-Nationals delay of 5 hours 26 minutes. One thing to keep in mind. Postponements are in the hands of the home team officials until the game starts, then the umpires decide when to restart, delay, or postpone. The longest known delay, which ended in postponement was on August 12, 1990 in Chicago, between the White Sox and Rangers. It was delayed 7 hours, 23 minutes before being called off and rescheduled to be played in Arlington 5 days later. It was scheduled for 1:35 and was called off at 8:58, having never started. The longest known delay during a game that was completed was October 3, 1999 in Milwaukee, between the Brewers and Reds. There was a 5 hour, 45 minute delay, prior to the start of the game, which was scheduled for 3:05, started at 8:50, and finished at 11:26. It was reported only about 200, of the 55,000 fans remained at the end. The longest known combined delay during the game was an even 5 hours - June 9, 1980 in Philadelphia, in a game between the Phillies and Giants. It started at 7:35 as scheduled, there was a delay of 1:28 in the 4th, then restarted, then a second delay in the same inning of 3:32. the game ended at 3:11 a.m. There was a college game between Delaware and Harvard that was delayed 8 hours 12 minutes, in the top of the 7th.

  • Yankees had one last year that was delayed in the 8th inning, and was replayed several months later. Don't really know why they did this considering they were up 5 runs. Really don't know why they chose to suspend this instead of just calling it.
