AVG, AdAware, and Spybot: Search and Destroy all are pretty terrible. Give it a real trojan, like virtumonde and it will not even detect it.

Save yourself the trouble and get

    Symantec AntiVirus Corporate

Windows defender is actually pretty good as antispyware and antivirus

Also, Superantispyware is one of the best too...

AVG is free for a reason.....

Spybot S&D is the free version of Adaware.....there is pretty much no difference.....other that they cant clean most spyware properly since many tend to replicate on startup....

Spybot and adaware treat the symptoms.....NOT the disease.....take it from a computer scientist....

Depends on your system configuration. Due to my profession I have experiemented with many AV / OS configurations. The best result for both performance and detection is Windows Vista SP1 with McAfee 8.5 and Windows Defender. This combination is very effective. If you are trying to get rid of a virus because you are currently unprotected there are three good options. 1) Try McAfee 8.5 (trial mode) and Windows Defender, see how it goes and hope the virus hasn't done its damage. 2) Scrub your machine manually; registry, start-up exe's, and unknown processes 3) Restore Windows from a backup point. I use Norton Ghost.

If your computer has been accessing the Internet unprotected it is infected. Spyware has surpassed viruses as the #1 threat to identity theft and without protection your Internet activities are never private.

    To remove it.

    Comodo Anti-Virus

Comodo Antivirus provides real-time scanning, where it resides in memory and checks your programs for viruses as they are run, as well as on-demand scanning for viruses. You can also schedule your scans. It automatically updates itself through the internet. This is a Windows program.

    Antidote Super Lite version

Freeware lite version of the commercial Antidote program. It utilizes the same virus database as the commercial version.

    MicroWorld Free AntiVirus Toolkit Utility

MWAV provides you with a FREE utility to enable you to scan for any virus, spyware, adware or any other malware from your computer. MWAV requires no installation and can be run directly from any where on your computer or from a CD ROM. It can also be run even if you have any other antivirus software installed on your computer.

The detection database will constantly be kept updated on a daily basis to detect newer spyware and adware, plus the engine is constantly being improvised for faster and intelligent detections.

    BitDefender Free Edition

BitDefender Free Edition offers ICSA Labs certified virus scanning of your files. It includes an on-demand Virus Scan, Scheduler, Online Update, Quarantine and reports. In addition, the scheduler allows you to scan selected files, folders or drives automatically at user specified intervals. BitDefender can scan inside archives, mail databases (Outlook etc.) as well as the boot sector. The free version does not include on-access or email scanning, so it is not suited as your only virus protection, however it is useful as a `second opinion scanner` since it integrates into the Explorer right click menu, and lets you easily access it when you need to scan a file.

    Dr.Web CureIt

Dr.Web CureIt is a standalone anti-virus and anti-spyware scanner that scans your PC for viruses, trojans, adware, spyware, hack tools, rootkits, and other malware. The program does not require an installation and can be run from a USB drive. This is an on-demand scanner only, it can detect and remove virus infections but does not provide any real-time protection. Dr.Web CureIt is based on the ICSA certified Dr. web scanning engine and should provide reliable detection.

    AntiVirus Free Edition

PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition is an anti-virus scanner, that provides real-time protection against viruses, worms and Trojans. It also offers on-demand scans, as well as automatic updates and real-time scanning of incoming and outgoing mail.

Other features include heuristic scanning and scheduled scans. The Free Edition offers limited support and non-priority updates.

    Clamwin

Free, small footprint anti-virus and anti-spyware scanner anti-virus software tends to be big and bloated, use plenty of RAM and system resources, and generally clog up your system. Worse is that increasingly, anti-virus makers make it difficult to buy anti-virus software by itself, and include firewalls, anti-spyware and other software with it. If you want a clean, mean piece of anti-virus software that does just one thing — protect against viruses — you’ll want this program.

t has a small footprint, and doesn’t take up much system resources. It will scan your entire hard disk at once for viruses and spyware, or can scan individual files and folders.

It also includes a Microsoft Outlook add-in to remove virus-infected attachments automatically from your email. There is one drawback to the program, though: It oesn’t include real-time virus protection.

AVG free Anti-virus is great and its free. For everything else I use SuperAdBlocker, its kind of a jack-of-all-trades program that blocks spyware, adware and pop-ups.
