Macbook problems?

I was surfing the net last night and everything froze up. I had to turn off the computer and now it won't turn on. The screen lights up but it just sits there. I did have a folder come up in the middle of the screen with a question mark on it. Can anyone help? I don't have a repair shop anywhere close to me and I can't call support because I didn't purchase the extended warranty.
