check out petfinder.com - it is an awesome site...you can search by location, size, breed, and all kinds of things...plus they have pics, so you can find an individual that catches your eye:)

In response to "me" from above, PLEASE do not fall into the teacup trap...there is no such thing as a teacup maltese, yorkie, or any of that...they are naturally small breeds and people who try to sell teacups are either just calling them that to make more money or are intentionally breeding the runts to make tiny, sickly puppies. Just google "teacup myth" and you'll find the truth.

    ADD:

Look at these! They are all maltese (puppies) which would probably be a good breed for you, judging from what you want in a dog...I have one, and I love her more than anything:) She is the biggest sweetheart, super smart, playful, and hilarious. These search results are in Indianapolis, but you can easily change the location to find some near you.

Don't pick a dog based on its cuteness alone. It's temperament has a lot to do with ensuring a successful relationship. Also remember most people selling "teacup" versions of any breed are probably just giving you the runt of the liter. Not all the time but be careful. Adoption would be best. There are a lot of small homeless dogs out there that need love too. :)

Most small dogs have BIG personalities and need to feel safe and secure at ALL times. If you can make that commitment, go for it. If you do not want constant barking and running (aka bully tears) do NOT get a terrier. They are wonderful dogs but aren't for the faint of heart. They require a lot of exercise and you cannot keep them in a little carry around bag. I strongly agree with the person who said "if you are getting a dog based on cuteness and being cuddly, maybe you should reconsider getting a dog" get a stuffed animal. They are not accessories.

If a mutt is fine, why not go to your local shelters and look around at the small breed dogs and see if one catches your eye?

So you just want a dog because it will be "small and cute?" Nah, I don't think so.

People normally want a dog for everything else besides that.

    Get a stuffed animal instead.

Or go to your local shelter.

Chihuahuas are the smallest breed out there, doesn't get any smaller.

    DON'T GET A TEACUP.

Go to akc and look at the toy breeds.

You do realize that a dog is not a fashion accessory correct?

Get a cocker. They are not super small but they don't yelp all the time like other small dogs do.
