Thessaloniki hotel?
I'm going to be in Thessaloniki for three days this month (July 20 through July 22). I have never been to Thessaloniki (or Greece) before, and want to know if any locals have a recommendation for a good place to stay while I'm there. We would rather not stay in a typical Western hotel (no big chain hotels), but definitely do want some place that will be comfortable and convenient. (We are arriving via train from Istanbul; I will be flying out early morning on the 22nd...) Does anyone have a recommendation? Thanks!

Thessaloniki is full of hotels.
Depends on the budget and location. If you want to be in the centre of the city, near the sea, near the shops ( the fashionable streets of Mitropoleos and Tsimiski, near the Aristotle square ) you can choose CITY Hotel ( price aprox. for summer offer Double 110 - 120 EUR with BB), very clean, very descent. Also Electra Palace ( located on Aristotle Square) 5* is very nice, just make sure you book a room with sea - squere view ( price 140 - 180 BB) , El Greco is very nice- is on the Egnatia Str. very reasonable prices, clean and recentely renovated, the staff is great ( DBL aprox 70- 80 EUR with BB).
Makedonia Palace is great, l think in July they have a good summer offer ( 140 EUR BB) Its location is fantastic, by the sea, close to the Park, to the White Tower, to Vasilico Theatre, to shops, to the Archaelogical Museum, to the Byzantine Museum and only minutes distance on foot.
Definetely avoid hotel Capsis, Holiday Inn, Vergina - they are very very close to the train station but at the moment the area is terrible due to the metro construction works.
Also avoid hotel ABC!
Don't worry about distances, Thessaloniki is easy to walk and take the bus.
