First Orthodontist Visit and Braces. :) I wanted to know how long it took from first appointment to get braces

Hey everyone.

Just wanted to know how long (roughly) it is from your first orthodontist visit (where you get the moulds and x-rays taken etc) to actually get your braces on?

I've got my first orthodontist visit in mid- August, and I'm going overseas in September, and I wondered whether or not I'd have my braces by the time I go overseas.

I've had three teeth extracted due to caries and abscesses, and my genral dentist said I probably wouldn't need any more teeth taken out for orthodontal work.

I also have an impacted canine tooth, which sits above my teeth on the front of the jaw, which is breaking through the gum already.. I don't know if that will affect my orthodontic work or not. Genral dentist didn't mention it.

Thanks guys.

Much appreciated! :)

    I had three first appointments.

The absolute first one was when they settled the cost and insurance stuff--I didn't have much of a part.

The second one was when they took the molds of my teeth.

A week later, they put spacers in my teeth, which are pre-braces pads between your teeth to prepare them for the actual braces.

Two weeks later, I finally got the actual braces put on, but only the top ones. Depending on you situation, they might stagger the way they put the appliances on.

So from the mold appointment, I'd say it took three weeks to a month.

You will probably miss about an hour to an hour and thirty minutes. Probably about the same amount as it took to get your braces on. When they're done with taking your braces off they will probably take some before and after pictures... that's what they did with me. When you're all done your teeth might feel a little slimy but it is all worth it for pretty teeth. Good Luck and hope your teeth turn out to be pretty. :)

I got my braces on today...

I went to the dentist to get the xrays and molds done about a week and a half ago. Today, they put everything on. The wires, the brackets, everything. So it really didn't take that long, but it depends on your orthodontist. Good luck. =D

well for me that was 2 different appointments, i had one where i got my molds done & luckily for me my orthodontist has different flavors to choose from so it tasted good, not the gross kind & the xrays and pictures done in the one visit. then i went back a month or so later to have them actually put on

It took me 2 years till my braces came off, and now I have to wear retainers everyday for a year and after that i'll have to just wear retainers one a month. (note that the retainers are clear so you cant notice them, but the braces are noticable). Overall it will take about 3 - 4 years.
