Which type of pet mouse is better?

My 10 year old son wants to get himself a pet mouse (worryingly we have 2 cats), but I wondered if there is a particular type he should get ?

    A mouse mouse.

The mice you find in most pet stores are all the same. Mus musculus. Even the "feeder" mice are the same as the "fancy" mice, except they're separated because the feeder mice are albino and the fancy mice have different colors or patterns.

There are a few others species of mice on the pet market, but they're much less common. I have two spiny mice, and sometimes you can find zebra mice, usually from breeders and never from Petsmart or Petco. I've found spiny mice to be very timid if they aren't handled from a young age, and they're a little more fragile than "regular" mice.

If your son wants a mouse, he's better off getting two - males can be kept alone if he only wants one, but males are also pretty stinky. Two female mice (make sure they aren't in a cage with boys or you'll end up with 20!) are probably your best bet. They're very social and will be happier with company.

A good starting point if you want to read up on their care:

There are no different types of mice only different varieties of them. Different shades and colors. Being the fact you have cats if you do get a mouse or 2 I would make sure that the cage you get the bar spacing is extremely small. I mean a rat can squeeze through a hole the size of a quarter. As long as they can get there head through its fair game. A mouse is so much smaller. I would just call some of your local petshops and see what colors they have. Another idea is call some local rescues or go online to them and try to adopt a mouse if they have one to give it a good home. Some animal shelters get them to.

All mice are the same. They all make good beginner pets. If you were getting a pet hamster that would be different, because there are many kinds, and lots to choose from. As long as you get a mouse that is domesticated they should be fine...

Personally, I'd reccommend the fancy mice! They are best kept in pairs as they are quite social providing you buy them at the same time. However if you do buy two of these make sure they are definatley the same gender...or you could end up with more than you asked haha! These mice are usually very easy to tame & so are Gerbils.

Hope this helps & good luck with you're new pet/s :]

i would not say they make super pets. they do no longer seem to be like rats. Mice will chew, even however mine have in no way drawn blood. They consume a competent volume of nutrition. Are continuously attempting to flee. do in comparison to interest for too long in the previous they attempt getting away. Have quite short lives. a number of the good issues approximately mice; they are quite stunning. Love in basic terms approximately any form of toy you place there. enjoyable to observe. i wouldn't likely say that they take excitement in human touch yet they do no longer likely seem to concepts being held for short classes of time. in case you like a rodent that loves interest, and likes to grant interest, this is affectionate, sensible, sparkling, and could be knowledgeable to perform a little tricks. Then get a rat. It concepts sound ewwy yet they are remarkable little critters. and that i admire mice, don't get me incorrect, yet rats are lots lots extra valuable. I was hoping this enables. good success! :D

A mouse is a mouse. There arn't any different 'types' that affect the personality

There are different colors, but none affect the personallity.
