What is the best means for removing Grass during Soil Preparation?

I am in the soil tilling process now but I understand unless, something is done to kill the grass and its seeds, it will return with a vengeance and I will work myself to death trying to keep it out. What can I do to remove this grass permanently? Also, I would like to make this process as organic as possible.

That's right. You can't just till it under.

You need to remove the grass, and if you want to make it permanant and organic, the only way is to DIG it out.

Which isn't really difficult ... but it is time-consuming and hard work.

Use a spade-shovel to remove a square at a time. The sod will weigh more than you think, so work in small squares!

Jam the blade of the shovel straight down into the sod, to just below the roots ... do this several times in a straight line. Then repeat the process on three other sides, until you've marked out a square. Lift one edge of the square with the shovel and work the shovel all the way under to the opposite side, and to each outer corner. (Think of it like a spatula turning an egg).

Then lift that entire section out. Continue until you've removed every last bit of sod in the area you wish to till.

You can reuse that sod if you've got an area that's sparse.

There are sprays that you can use to kill grass, but unfortunately, they also kill most of the good stuff in the soil. If you choose to use a grass-killer, be sure to follow the instructions ... often an area that's been treated with grass-killer cannot be used for planting for quite awhile after.

There are some products on the market that are echo friendly.

The best way is round up but it's not what your wanting to use.

Your already in the tilling process so you have disturbed the grass/soil so aside from using a chemical(whether Eco or non) cover the area with black plastic sheeting and let the sun bake the ground. The heat generated is going to help kill off the unseen grass and it's seeds. Till the area again and cover. this will take up to 2-3 weeks depending on your geographical location.

till as you are doing remove loose grass to compost heap keep tilling and removing until there is no visible grass left till again in a few days to remove anything you have missed you will find you have no grass growing if it starts to grow again remove by hand as soon as you see it unfortunately seed blows in the wind so you are going to get grass but you can control it if you remove it as you see it you also gain a nice compost heap for your organic growth good luck
