My cat keeps throwing up?

I have two cats, one of my cats just started throwing up. I think it might be a hairball and I will try some hairball remedy. It's only the IAMS dry food (he doesn't really chew it) that he is throwing up. He is okay if I give him a small amount of wet food. Otherwise, he is fine, he is having a problem pooping though, very small poops. I will take him to the vet if this doesn't get better, anybody else experience this problem.? My other cat is okay, no problems.

Update:

Sorry, no both of my cats are strictly indoor cats.

If your cat is constantly throwing up, take it tot he vet immediately. Dehydration is dangerous in cats and your feline buddy looses a lot of liquids when it has diarrhea or vomits.

It seems he might have a stomach problem, since he is ok eating small quantities of wet food. You could also try changing his food to another brand. A good one is Hill's Science Diet.

As for your cat feces being small, your cat may be clogged up. Vets recommend you give your cat Laxatone. It's a lubricant to help them get those nasty hairballs down. Cats constantly groom themselves and a lot of hairs get swallowed. Buy Laxatone, follow the directions.

It sounds as if you have already found some answers - switching to wet food (which is healthier for cats anyway) and using hairball remedy.

As to the small poops - are you saying this is abnormal, and that he's constipated? If that's the case, an easy remedy is canned pumpkin (100% pumpkin, no spices) mixed into the canned cat food - maybe 1/8 tsp. to start. Also an over-the-counter medication that you can buy in any drugstore: Miralax. It's easy to use because it's a dry product that has no odor or flavor and dissolves in wet food. The usual amount is to start w/ 1/8 tsp. in the morning and again at night. Wait 3 days. You can tell by then if you need to increase the dosage or cut it back.

If the constipation doesn't ease, the vet may have to give your cat an enema, but this is expensive. Hopefully, the other techniques will work beautifully for you. The Miralax is something you wouldn't want to use long-term necessarily, but the pumpkin you can use every day.

Hairball food/medication can also help in the short term - you don't want to use too much, too often.

Am sending you a link to a marvelous listgroup called WholeCatHealth - they call answer all kinds of cat care questions, and they're really nice folks.

The cat is eating too fast, place a few golfballs into his bowl so he has to hunt around for his food.

As for the constipation, treat the cause not the symptom.

You cannot force a cat to drink more, but you can feed them more wet food and add in a bit of water - rarely does constipation stay.

Does your cat get outside? Last year I had a cat start throwing up and it turns out she was sick from a bacteria that cats often get from drinking outdoor water (I have a small creek/pond running through my property beyond the back yard.) It took some antibiotics to clear it up.
