When I turn on my computer everything loads normally but when I go to any icon to open a file..The Blue Screen of Death goes on. My question is how or what can I do to save my files from my documents before I wipe out the hard drive? Thank you!

Well the 2 most logical options I can think of:
1- Have you tried safe mode> system restore?
2- DOS backup(link below for more)
For more about booting into DOS follow 2nd link

Reboot into Safe Mode by pressing F8 at boot (with Networking, if you want to access the Internet or your LAN for backup purposes).
Once booted, you might want to rescue things like your Documents and Settings folder (this includes your Favorites), your Firefox profile, etc.

Could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software. This problem can be solved by uninstalling new softwares, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes . try connecting your hard disk to another machine, access your system partition , go my documents folder(on Windows XP C:\Documents and settings\USER_NAME\Documents ,on Vista C:\Users\USER_NAME\Documents, remember to replace c with drive letter of system partition and USER_NAME for your user account)
this will work unless the files is encrypted in case of NTFS partition.
