Help with my computer?

My laptop randomly turns off without warning. I think it's because it overheats, but I'm not sure. Is there a way to fix this? Also, how can I change what programs run at startup?

I will try to answer both parts of your question...

1st - turning off... this is usually caused by overheating. I would expect that you have had the laptop for a period to time and that it wasn't heating up when you first bought it.

The cure is to clean you cpu heatsink & fan. To do this I would first get a can of compressed air and blow out the dust through the fan holes and any other vents that you may have. Now try it. If it continues to shut off without warning, the next step would be to open up the laptop and clean out the heatsink - this way you can see the whole cpu/heatsink/fan setup. By the way, if you were up to it, I would remove the cpu heatsink, cleanoff the thermal grease from the cpu and the heatsink and then put a thin layer of Arctic Silver thermal grease on the top of the cpu with my finger... it only needs a fine coat to cover the whole cpu. Then put it all back together. (At least that's what I would do.) Opening up a laptop is not something for the inexperienced person to do - you need the service manual, the right tools, a cool disposition, not a person who - when tightening a screw - usually overtightens it and breaks something. Take lots of notes and pictures as to where everything goes.

You may want to take it to an independent repair shop (that is, not Bestbuy or one of those chain stores) and have it done.

2nd - programs running at startup.

Go to Start/Run and type msconfig and hit enter. Choose startup programs and turn off any program that you don't want to startup. If you are unsure of what something is, you can do a Google search on the program. Be careful, know what you're turning off... you could turnoff something that you need to be running. Note, you are only stopping the program from running automatically upon bootup, you are not deleting the program.

    Hope this helps.

There are two ways to fix this problem... one, get a cooling pad, ie, it has at least two fans in it, and is supposed to keep your computer cooler by drawing the heat away from it.. the other is to raise your computer so that air is able to circulate underneath it...

Delete some programs you don't frequently use

    Defrag the HDD

    Run spybot and superantivirus

Use compressed air and clean it out

On a Mac, shift/manage/three takes a photo of the display. If you press shift/manage/four, you'll click on and drag over the subject you wish; the photo is taken while you liberate the mouse button.

I used to get that, but that was because i had downloaded too many things, so i had to clean up my desktop and uninstall things i didn't use.

If its over heating, maybe you should use it less?
