What percentage of people do you believe are truly gay/lesbian/bisexual?

If our society were more open and there was no stigma attached to being gay, lesbian, or bisexual, what percentage of the population do you believe would truly fall into these categories?

Would the percentages differ for men and women?

It seems to me that there is a sizable segment of the population choosing not to disclose their sexual identity...which they are free to do, but it makes me wonder...

    I'd guess 25 to 30%

EDIT - You were asking our guestimation on the numbers IF society were more open about the subject that is why my number is that high. It has already been pretty much determined that without society being open the percentage is between 8 to 12%

I'd say around 10 percent as well. This is based on an independent study done by a polling agency. The results might shock most american christians. It found that american christians know the least about their own religion. 30 percent of those asked thought that Joan of Arc was Noah's wife, etc. So I stick by my answer.

  • The average ratio from several studies are that 9.56% of men are homosexual and 4.75% of women are homosexual.

In 1995, a survey (The prevalence of homosexual behavior and attraction in the United States, the United Kingdom and France: Results of national population-based samples - Sell, Wells, and Wypij) reported 6.2, 4.5, and 10.7% of males and 3.6, 2.1, and 3.3% of females in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, respectively, report having had sexual contact with someone of the same sex in the previous 5 years. 20.8% of U.S. males and 17.8% of U.S. females had some homosexual behavior or some homosexual attraction (i.e. both homosexual & bisexual).

A 1994 study (The Social Organization of Sexuality: Sexual Practices in the United States - Laumann, Gagnon, Michael, Michaels) reported that the incidence rate of homosexual desire for men is 7.7% and 7.5% for women.

A 1993 study (The Janus Report on Sexual Behavior - Janus and Janus) found 9% of men and 5% of women were involved in frequent or ongoing homosexual experiences.

A 1990 study (Homosexuality/Heterosexuality by McWhirter, Sanders, and Reinisch) stated 13.95% of males and 4.25% of females had "extensive" or "more than incidental" homosexual experience.

The Indiana University Kinsey Reports (Sexual Behavior in the Human Male - Kinsey, Pomeroy, and Martin/Sexual Behavior in the Human Female - Kinsey, Pomeroy, Martin, and Gerhard) reported 10% of males being more or less exclusively homosexual and 2% to 6% of females being more or less exclusively homosexual.

The use of averages from several studies are more likely to show a true representation of the number of gay individuals.

I'm gonna say somewhere between 10-20 percent of the population is GLorB.

Just a guess though lol, there was some study that said approximately 10% but I think there's more. At least bisexual. Because there is always shades of rainbow in between. ;)

    Conservatives say 4%

    Liberals say 10%

I say there is 4% that are OPEN about it, but overall 10% (including the ones still in the closet).

Then again, I don't think it's possible to know for sure. That's because there are gays/lesbians in the closet. When it comes to knowing for sure who is gay or lesbian, it's not about who is, it's about who will admit it.

I believe it's most definitely more than 10%. As for anything higher than 20 or 25%, I'm really not sure. I've known a lot of people who just didn't want to say anything because they were either scared they'd be hated and mocked, or scared they'd be pressured into performing in front of an audience.....

I think almost everyone is bisexual. I think there would be 90% of people who lie between the ranges of bisexuality, and then the other 10% would be the exclusively homosexual or exclusively heterosexual people.

I think it's much more than 10 percent.

Only 10 percent are willing to admit it.
