Do you know the technical details of the new 80 GB PS3 version to be released in September?
I read yesterday that "Sony Slashes $100 From Price of 80GB PlayStation 3". But the details are vague. From what I'm reading, the new 80GB version will not be PS2 backward compatible or have the SD/CF/Memory Stick slot. Essentially, you're paying the same price ($399) for a low-end PS3 with a bigger hard drive (40GB to 80GB). Does anyone have more details on the September 80GB PS3 version? Will buyers get a bundled video game or the DualShock 3 controller with the new version? Will there be a PS3 that's PS2 backward compatible in the future (a 120 GB version?)?
Right now, the only available PS3 that's PS2 backward compatible is the 80GB bundle with Metal Gear Solid 4 and the DualShock 3 controller for $499. Hard to find in stores...
Thanks for the responses. It seems the headlines were a little misleading. You're paying the same price but you're getting a bigger HD.

the 80 wont come with a game but will come with a dualshock 3 controller. it is the same exact model as the 40g right now but with an 80g harddrive. a new ps3 with a bigger harddrive and there are rumors of a 120g model with backwards compatability to be released later on this year or next year.

it is basically what you will be getting with 40 gb model so you need to get the current 80 gb model if you want backwords compatibility. most gamestops usually have at least 1 in stock so try there

The new 80GB is the same 40GB, but with a larger HDD. That's it, nothing new.
