Incorrect Windows XP product key?
I acquired a used computer with Windows XP Professional installed. I attempted to update the software and got the message that the product key is invalid. The computer case has the original product key sticker on it. Will that product key be valid if I install Windows XP Home edition on the computer, since I have the disk?

Does the product key on the jewel case match the one on the cd or the sticker on the back/bottom of the computer? They should all be the same. If not, someone put the wrong cd in the wrong jewel case, in which case you are out of luck.

I have seen it work and I have seen it not work.
If you try it and it doesn't work you don't lose anything.
at least when/if you call windows to re-activate you will have the original product key on the tower to give them. then they will give you a new working key to type into your PC.

The product key on the sticker has to match the version on the sticker
