A 56k modem simply is the modem installed in computers that allow you to use the old dial up way of connecting to the Internet.

Most all computers come with the 56k Modem pre-installed on them.

Nowadays very few users opt for the old dial up connections, but rather use DSL or CABLE which requires an Ethernet Card to be Installed on the computer and thus allows for a much faster and more up to date technology.

All dial up modems are 56k because that is the maximum you can shove up a voice telephone line.

And for those are saying about have broadband because dial up is slow. What about if you live in a small village in the middle of nowhere and more than 4 miles away from the nearest exchange?

How are you going to get Broadband then? We don't all live in towns!

It's either dial up or go without. When I lived in Cornwall, our nearest town was 8 miles away and the local exchange was in the next village and no bigger than a garden shed. So what's good in broadband and Wi-Fi then?

Normal dialup modems only go up to 56k (any notebook with a normal modem will have a 56k). For broadband internet you need to use an external modem (usually provided by the ISP). These external modems can be connected to your notebook over Wi-Fi, LAN or USB. Therefore don’t worry about the sped of that integrated dialup modem, those are not used anymore anyways, my notebook doesn’t even have one ;-).

A 56k Modem may not be needed if you are getting a modern laptop. Most laptops have Wi-Fi now so you may not need the modem at all.

Besides 56k Moden is for dialup i will not recommened a 56k modem because it is realy slow.

56k modem is basically a dialup modem and slow, but you dont have to use that if you got wifi, you will connect from the router to you wifi card plugged into a rj45 socket or usb port. take a little setup but you will be fine

The 56K modem is very useful, connecting your laptop to a phone line and using it as an answering machine / fax machine.

    Not bad just slow.

Although there is one beniffet. With you having dial up or a slow connection. The bigger viruses will take a lot longer to get to your computer allowing you to realize you maybe downloading a bad program. In other words you will think twice before you open or download any thing.

You can buy an external or internal modem or card as long as your computer is able to handle the information. Your processor speed will tell you that.

Why do you want a dial-up modem?

Broad band is so readily available these days.

The machine should have at least a 100Mb ethernet port, and/or wireless for connection to a broadband router.

It's standard. You most likely will not be using it as you'll probably be on broadband.
