2003 Dodge Neon Transmission Problems?

My 2003 Dodge Neon SE (70,000 miles automatic transmission) has been having some transmission problem. When I put the car in drive it will move then it stops and feels like it is in neutral or 3rd gear. I have to put it in park then back to drive until I hear it "click".

It has had a series of problems the last couple of months. It occasionally will overheats when driving long distances (i.e. 500 miles) and I had problems starting it a couple of times. I changed the thermostat (which stopped the frequency of it overheating) and replaced the cam shaft sensor . My main concern right now is the transmission. What should I do? Change filter and fluid, flush, have someone work on the transmission, etc? I'm planning on purchasing a new vehicle in the next year so I dont want to spend a whole lot of cash.

take it by any transmission shop and let them test drive it they wont charge you nothing for doing this and then they can give you a real good idea on what they think is causing this to happen,i wouldn't spend any money on it though unless i had a hands on opinion on what is wrong with it,good luck.

The problem could be an electrical component, or physical damage. Have the codes pulled. Some transmissions require a special code puller. If no codes are present, and the fluid smells or looks bad, you may have mechanical problems in the transmission. Good luck.

Dodge Neon is to me a very dependable car. I have a 2000 model year with 75000 miles on it and a 2004 with 19000. First at all they are good cars. With that miles, what you did with the thermostat and sensor are pure maintenance according with the miles. You need to have checked your transmission. The transmission fluid can tell you inside problems, like color. This should be clear red, not dark red and should not have burn smell

i think i would go the cheapest route. i would change the tranny oil and filter first, who knows, that could be all you have to do to it.
