Demeter was the divine Greek Goddess of Harvest, she gave crops the sweet nectar, and palatable corn that every human desired. When Persephone was taken into the Kingdom of Hades, not only did Demeter mourn for her daughter, she transformed into a human. While in her human transformation, she visited a woman, and stole the woman's child, and she cared for her as her own.

Yes. That is why she was likely the most worshiped of the Greek gods. The hymn to Demeter is virtually the first tragedy. Her daughter was kidnapped, and even when returned was still taken from her for one third of each year. The winter months were cold because Demeter was in mourning.

I have a text file of the whole Hymn. Email me if you would like a copy.
