As a reader, I think it is possible that absolutely anyone could write a book since everyone sees the world in a different way and that's part of what reading is all about.
As a publisher, it is our job to determine which books are most likely to appeal to the largest number of people. Sometimes we have special project books though that we know aren't going to sell many but are still important for us to do.
People tend to write either for themselves, or for someone else. The best books are a good combination of those two motivations. If you write only for yourself, well, then there is no reason to ever publish the book since other people won't be able to apreciate it. If you write only for other people the book will feel contrived and the reader will know that the author is only trying to make money with it. The best books are ones that the author has a serious personal commitment too, but is also distanced enough to be able to read it from the perspective of a reader.

I have never had a novel published, but almost 30 short stories have been published several years ago. I am working on a trilogy of novels now. I did not train with anyone, and I feel it comes from within. You do have to be able to do character studies, write good conversation that is not stilted, and have a great flow. It is easier to write about something you are familiar with, and you do not have to fill it with great amounts of angst. I have always done well in school and university, but feel I am an ordinary person. One thing that may be helpful to you is to join a writers' group. Very good luck to you!

My friend wrote a book about caring for her husband who was dying of liver cancer. No one would publish her book so she went to a printer. He made her a beautiful book but she had to pay for 2,000 copies in advance. She did. She toured the US and attended book fairs where she sold her book. She sold them all.
Book writers brains are pretty similar to other brains when viewed at an autopsy. It must be something hidden. No IQ differences either. Writers are just regular people.

I have never written a book but I have had 4 poems published. I like to write because sometimes I feel very lonesome and it helps me be creative and explore. I am not gifted, nor do I have an abnormally high IQ but I love to use my imagination and it pleases me to write about experiences I may have had, friends, relationships or what I would like to happen in my future.
