What type of birth control should I use for...?

...my situation? I have never been on birth control before, and am getting married this fall. I am very anti all type of drugs, and don't even take a Motrin unless I absolutely have to. With that being said, I don't want to have to use condoms throughout my marriage. I would loved to have implemented something more natural and organic, but my periods are extremely irregular. Can you recommend any low dose birth control methods (i.e. the pill (and if so, which kind,) etc.?) Looking for something where I don't gain weight (as it is, I need to lose 30 pounds before I get married,) and something that doesn't get rid of periods altogether (that just seems so unnatural.) Thanks in advance!

I have two recommendations for you - one I have used, and one I have now.

Birth control pills (even low-dose kinds) made me gain weight, so when I voiced my concerns about that to my GYN, she suggested I start on the NuvaRing. It's a ring that you insert into your vagina for 3 weeks, and take out on your 4th week to have your period. It worked great, I didn't have any weight gain at all, and it was very convenient.

About 2 or 3 years ago, I had stopped the NuvaRing and had an IUD inserted (Mirena). I haven't had any weight gain on this either, but do have some breakthrough bleeding when I'm not on my period (although very rare and light). It can be kept in for up to 5 years (Paragard can be used up to 10 years). When you'd like to have children, they can remove it.

Although I share your enthusiasm and want for a natural contraceptive, unfortunately to regulate your periods, you would have to be on a synthetic hormone. You can talk to your doctor to see if they have any thoughts.

    Hope this helped!
