stray dog help?
A stray chiuahua has been hanging around the neighborhood for right about a week now. Nobody knows where it came from and it has no collar or ID tags. We suspect it may be abandoned. I feel so bad for the poor dog and I want to feed it and try to earn its trust, but it is scared and will not let anybody get near it. I will try leaving food out for it but we are a neighborhood full of cat lovers and I am afraid the cats will get the food long before the dog will find it. We also have lots of raccoons around so I fear for the dog's safety being left outside all night as these raccoons have killed my neighbor's cat and injured my cat on one occasion.
What can I do to try and comfort this little dog and earn its trust?

Outside of putting food out for him - the only other method would be to set a trap (A HUMANE TRAP - ya know, food with trap door) - again however, your likely going to catch a neighbor cat or coon....
Might consider trying to contact the local Human society - SPCA or the like to see if there is something they could do to help

call the local humain society!!!!! they take care of dogs and cats an many other animals! This will teach the dog not to be shy, and it will get fed and bathed! Also, later on, it will probably get a good home! : )

get a hot dog or another tasty human food (meat)
and toss it in the dogs direction, keep giving him food like this. then try and inch your way torwards it and see if its gained any trust through being fed.
