Very bizarre situation with my dogs...?
They both woke up with hind end weakness yesterday. We took them to the vet and they checked out fine. Not in pain, just weak. Unable to step up onto furniture, or up even one step. Neither of them got into anything that would poison them, they're both eating and drinking, peeing and pooping.
The vet did a full exam including neurological tests. All came back perfect.
One is a 4 year old Lab/Pointer mutt and the other is a 3 year old JRT/Beagle mutt and they are both healthy dogs. The JRT had an incident like this last year and they thought he had a hairline fracture in his spine, although the xray came out clean.
Just like when this happened last year with the one dog, both dogs are perfectly fine today. The vet is hanging on that they both are injurred. Maybe slipped discs or something and has ordered bedrest for both. I find it a bizarre coincidence that they both got the same injury, in the middle of the night, at exactly the same time.
Any ideas?
I vaccinate my dogs for everything under the sun, including lime disease. Both tested negative for it anyways. No new meds, nothing sprayed around the house or yard. I can't help think it's poison of some kind, but no one has a clue. Can dogs get sick from Japanese Beetles? My yard is loaded with them and that is the only thing I can think of...
Sorry so long, if you stayed with me here, thanks for "listening".
The vet did ckeck all areas of their bodies.
They eat Dick VanPatten's Natural Balance, not Nutro.
They have no GI symptoms at all.
I used Bayer pest control that is safe for animals. Besides, I kept them away from my plants for 3 hours after spraying to ensure it would be dry.

This seems rather odd and I know nothing about this. I guess if we are all stumped maybe the best thing you could do is mention the Japanese beattle problem to the vet. He should know if they could harm your dog.

Unfortunately you probably have to comply with his demands. It's sad, but true. I find it hard to believe that your dog racked up 3 grand in medical bills, so I don't think you'll be liable for the whole sum. However, you could be taken to court and in that case you will most likely have to pay for all of the resulting medical bills. The dog was yours, and your responsibility, and even if he's never bitten anyone before you're still going to be held accountable. What happened is what you're asking? Well, the dog recognizes your home as his territory and he was just defending his turf. No doubt, if you don't have lots of people over for parties every day, your dog was just startled. He may need a little rehabilitation, which I can't help you with, but I'm sure your local kennel club or animal shelter can help you with. I highly doubt this was an aggressive act, but more likely a territorial thing. With the proper training there's no reason animal control should take your dog away. I hope it all smooths out for you! Good luck...

That is really bizarre. My first thought was Lyme Disease, but since they've both tested negative & you vaccinate for it, the only other likely thing would be some toxin.
No poison put out for the Japanese beetles that they might have gotten into? No snack or any out of the ordinary food? They're both young dogs and not related, so the cause has to be something environmental in some way, something they were both exposed to. I hope you find the cause of it, good luck.

I know a couple who rescue poms and has eight at the moment. All, not kidding, all of them came down with a weakness in their hind quarters. It didn't happen all at once but eventually they all got it. No explaination from the vet. I'm alway suspicious of the food first.
I do suggest you follow up on the japanese beetles. If they got enough of them they may have caused a neurological reaction. I can't imagine them eating something that disgusting... oops for got we were talking about poopeaters.
Check on the bugs and in my area there was a lot of flooding so if there was a lot of rain they might have gotten into molds or toxins that would not normally been in their territory.
By the way the poms all recovered.

it sounds like first signs of athrithis if they are sleeping on bare concrete and it's cold at night that could be the problem i had a gsd that would get up every morning like that more like stiffness then weakness and sometimes he would sort of sway i thought nmaybe hip dysplasia but the vets could not find anything wrong with him.finally i took him to a mexican vet since i live close to the border, not to take anything from the american vets but the vets in mexico are so dedicated to their profession that they study a lot longer and know of more deseases.he is the one that told me about concrete causing what looks like lameness or other desease the cure make sure they don't have access to any hard cold floors.the problem was solved he was back to normal in a few days.i always had something so they could sleep on but they seemed to like the cold floor.hope this helps just my experience talking.

Are they together at night? Any chance they played very aggressively? My dog had a similar situation and the vet thought that my dog had sprained his tail, and the pain was causing him to exhibit signs of hind leg/tail weakness. This has happened a couple of times now. Scooter gets to playing rough with Lady (our other rabble-rowser) and next thing we know, he has a sprained tail again! The vet said it is like any bad sprain-- he then is more susceptible to future sprains and injuries.
We end up giving our dog Rimadyl and he gets better relatively quickly.
Good luck in solving your mystery

One of the more unusualy causes of hindlimb weakness/paralysis in dogs is macadamia nuts. Would your dogs have had any access to them, or to other nuts? It's a bit of a strange poisonng, with some dogs responding more to the toxic effect that others, but it takes about 1 gram of nut per kg of dog body weight to have an effect.
Dogs usually recover with a bit of time, but the paralysis can slowly spread further up the body. Some people think alnuts may also have this effect, but I haven't seen any evidence for that yet.

That is weird. The only time two of my dogs had identical symptoms, it turned out my next door neighbor had used pesticide on her plants that grew right next to our fence, and I guess it came through the roots of our plants or something. But the tests should have shown if any toxins were present.
All I can say is, I hope your dogs get all better, and it never happens again. Donna

If the problem was temporary, it could have been caused by them playing rough and possibly falling off furniture, stairs or rolling wrong. It could have been a temporary stun to a nerve. If it doesn't come back, and they checked out okay at your vet, it could be temporary injury from over zealous play.
