173rd/82nd airborne or Army Rangers??
ok i am about to join the Army with an 11x MOS and airborne in my contract ,,i really wana become a Ranger so i was thinking about getting the option 40 as well ))but i cant decide what 2 do... i am 18,, really really good shape,, i know i can pass Ranger school when it comes to the physical part..I'm (mentally tough) ,, smart.. ,, i just don't want 2 put myself in a position of failing the proses of becoming a Ranger ,or dropping out of RIP,i have never failed anything in life.and their is a chance off that if i get the option 40 contract ,,i will be fresh in the military u know//..and am only 18// ..should i just join the 82nd Airborne/175th airborne and try 2 go to Ranger school later on in my carrier .?..i know if i drop out of RIP i will most likely end up in the 82nd any way,,/ but i don't want 2 drop out off anything!! what is the best thing to do in ur opinion ??? just Go 4 the 75th RANGERS) .. or take it slow and just join the 82nd or 173rd..?? and go 4 the Ranger tab later..?

First off thx for joining. That said I do not want to discourage you but the Army hands out Option 40 contracts like candy. At any time the Ranger Regiment might only need 4 new 11B but there are say 100 11B's in RIP. That said if you want to be a Ranger get the option 40 contract you will only get one chance to try and be in the Ranger Regiment although as an infantryman you will have other chances to go to Ranger School. Plus even if you do not get selected out of RIP you will be a better Soldier for when you report to your first unit (Most likely the 82nd). The 82nd is a good place to be a grunt, and the infantry brigades there have several Ranger School slots,, and a very good Pre Ranger school program. Plus the standards in the 82nd are among the highest in the Army, and chances are several of your NCO's will have their Ranger Tab so they can prepare you later on. That said though even though most people who do not make it thru RIP go the 82nd that is not guarnteed. The 10th Mountain Division might be getting ready to deploy and is short handed, if something happens to you in RIP you become needs of the Army. Again if you have your heart set on wearing a Tan Beret, get the option 40 contract, it is your best bet, and if worse comes to worse you become needs of the Army, but become a seasoned Soldier right off the bat joining a unit set to deploy and you join the brotherhood of those who have their CIB.
Good luck to you

I personally suggest getting to your unit and learning the way the Army works before you go to Ranger school. I think this will give you an advantage. Just because your 11x doesn't mean your going to anything. If you go Airborne...Good for you. You are not promised to go to an Airborne unit or anything near one. You could be sent to Ft. Hood and be on the next plane to Iraq. You don't know. Keep you head up, learn what you can and once you have been in your unit 6 - 12 months and you are getting the hang of Army life then I suggest putting in a Ranger packet and getting that tab of yours.

i'll i wanna say is you will be looked at as high speed with ranger tab as a low rank that you would come in as. It would give you more options and more responsibilty. But out of anyone listen to 11b dude.
oh and 173rd is just getting back from Afghan right now.

remember if you join to be sf or ranger and wash out, you are at the mercy of the army needs and could get any mos(most likely infantry). like above said, join airborne first then pursue your goals. sf always actively recruiting
