How sad is the book A Thousand Splendid Suns?
I cried so much when I read the Kite Runner (although I loved it) that I'm a bit scared to read A Thousand Splendid Suns! If you've read it, what did you think?
Hi Onyx. All I'll say is that I cried while I was reading the Kite Runner as quite a few harrowing things happen and then I really cried at the end!! (not going to say why). Its a brilliant book.

I thought A Thousand Splendid Suns was better than the Kite Runner. It is very sad and at some points incredibly disturbing, but it is a MUST read. It is from the women's perspective in Afghanistan. I loved it, I went out and bought it when I was halfway through because I was enjoying it so much. It is a really really good book, even though it is sad, you must must read it!!!

I've read A Thousand Splendid Suns. It was too a sad book. I have no idea how to compare A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Kite Runner because I haven't read the latter yet (that's why I asked a question about it awhile ago).
BTW, why did you cry while reading The Kite Runner? I don't mind any spoilers. =]

I've only read about half of A Thousand Splendid Suns so far, but IMO it is much better than the kite runner.
It is sad in a way, but so far it hasn't been crying-sad.

A Thousand splendid Suns is sad as well. Probably even sadder. But the story line is so different and interesting. I personally enjoyed KR as the Thousand splendid suns story was not new. I have read similar , example Jean Sassoon and her series of Princess stories set in Saudia Arabia and many books which are womens persepective and set in Middle East.

It's very sad & bewildering to some extent; was appreciating the referrals about was going on in Kabul & felt I was getting some experience of the reality of living there; at some point this wore thin about halfway through. It felt more tolerable because it is indeed with a female focus. Amzing in its movement & the way in which Hosseini is able to write from the perspective of a woman with such sensitivity to the issues.
