Why are October and December..........?

Why is October the 10th month when it sounds like it should be the 8th?

and why is December the 12th when it should be the 10th?

    Because October and December used to be the 8th and 10th months in the old calender, before July and August were added by the Romans in honor of Julius and Augustus.
