I have sharp pain in the lower middle of my back. Could it be kidney related?

I awoke this morning with an acute, sharp pain in my lower back, mostly to the left of my spinal cord. I had fallen asleep on the couch, which is common; I thought it was just a bad position, but as the day has progressed, the pain has gotten worse. Also, I urinated a small amount in my jeans during my sleep (which never happens), and I had an extremely full bladder and had to urinate badly when I awoke. I didn't drink an above average amount yesterday. I'm afraid to waste my time on a rushed doctor's visit, but I'm afraid that letting it go could result in serious repurcussions. The pain is extremely sharp when someone presses down on the area. I don't have a fever or chills, although the pain is making me somewhat light-headed as the days goes on.

Any advice from you medical pros before I rush to the ER?

Go to the doctor and drink lots of fluids. Cranberry juice is reported to help with kidney problems. And don't wait. It's painful and needs medication to get over at this point.

Im 20 and have been suffering from my kidneys since I was 13. I had surgery on my right one due to the build up of scar tissue from the infections I had. Your situation sounds exactly like a kidney infection, sometimes it dull, and randomly you will get a sharp stab. I would go to the doctor for some antibiotics, they will help after a few days. In the mean time, drink a lot of water and cranberry juice. The acidity makes the walls of your kidneys slick, so bacteria will be less likely to stick. Good luck, and feel better! It sucks, because there's no instant pain reliever for this sort of thing.
