How many of you who follow one particular religion...?
... have studied other religions in any depth?
If so, what led you to choose to follow your religion? Was it logic, faith, upbringing, or myabe something else entirely?
Thanks in advance for your answers, it's just something I was curious about.

I am Catholic. I have been most of my life. I have studied Buddhism and almost converted but came back to Catholicism on my own by my own decision. I am working on my PH D right now and am studying Theology but that is not what my PH D is about. I have always had a very HUGE interest in other religions whether they be organized or not. I was raised Catholic but decided at one point in my life to "explore" other options. I have always been one who thinks that as long as one believes it something.....be it a God, a Deity, Buddha, Jehovah, Allah, a rock, a box, a tree, a monk, absolutely anything it is good
and positive.
I believe because of experiences that I have had in my life. God has been there for me and I have absolutely no doubt about this. I am a three time Cancer survivor and a childhood "trauma" survivor (very personal). Personally I know that there is a God and have been sick enough to have been pronounced dead and had "an experience". I believe because I've been in a different situation than a lot of different people. My faith cannot be shaken. I am not a bible toter and I do not impress or push or impress my religion or faith on anyone else. That is why I love America so much, freedom Religion, Speech and just about everything else.
Peace & Love :)

The only religion I have studied in any real depth is Christianity because I was brought up in a Catholic house and went to a Catholic school.
I have learned most of what I know about other religions from my friends - I have had Jewish, Muslim, Protestant, Hindu and Sikh friends - I like to get peoples views on religion so I know the basics of all these.
My own view on religion is that they are pretty much run like businesses by men who want money and/or power...I don't think any religion has got it right but I sometimes can't help thinking like a Catholic (it has been drummed into me over the years). I do believe in God.

I studied as many religions as possible in as much depth as I could manage. Not easy, since here in my particular part of the Midwest, it's generally a choice between Baptist and Pentecostal, with anything else being relegated to "devil worship."
What led me to Wicca was when I looked at it--and it was everything I already believed. It wasn't a revelation or a conversion, but a confirmation of the ideas I had formed on my own.

I didn't have any choice. I was told that there was only one Religion and one God, that being Christianity.
It was very strict, i.e. if i didn't attend church and bible studies on Sunday, no activities such as youth club, camp and various other things that i liked were made available to me the following week, In other words i was banned. (Unless there was a v.good excuse). Mention another Religion, just in curiosity, was completely taboo. It was treated almost like witchcraft.
So, there was Bribery, Corruption and total ignorance in no finer words forced upon me.
if that was honesty and faith, what was the rest of the world like? it put me off, a bit.

Answer: I was raised Orthodox Christian and studied that religon in depth. I also have done informal studies of Hopi and Mayan beliefs. I own two books of Hopi beliefs and a copy of the Popal Vuh in addition to several copies of the Bible in various translations -- this is ON TOP OF books pertaining to my CURRENT religon of Hellenic Polytheism.
The reason that I follow my religion is because of experiences with my Gods that cannot be explained away as solely being due to coincidence or as hallucinations.

Hello, to answer your question I must first say I am a Christian (Roman Catholic) and it was mandatory for us to study and learn about other religions and cultures as part of our religion classes. This was really useful in understanding people from these religions/cultures and even though at the moment religion is a testy subject, I found it very interesting. The religion I found most interesting was Sikhism, apart from my own that is :)

i have, i was born into islam and accepted it until i grew a little and decided, i don't want to be in a religion that i was born into, i want to pick it myself, decide for myself, so i did some research and ended up with islam
islam is a very peaceful religion no matter what the media says (those extremists are not truly doing it for islam, because this religion does not condone what they are doing), and it just makes the most sense out of the three i researched, christianity, judaism, and islam, research it, you might find what i found in islam as well
a lot of ppl don't know that much about islam, that's for sure, don't be like them plz, learn about it what's the worse that could happen by just learning?

answer: I am a Heathen (Germanic/A-S pagan)
I was raised Christian as a protestant and learned about Catholicism.
I was an eclectic pagan for awhile and studied a few of the traditions and religions in paganism.
I continue to learn about other religions. I've read the Book of Mormon and websites. I've learned about Scientology. I've learned about Islam - not to convert to any of them but I find religions fascinating.
I'm currently learning about Judaism and Quakers.

I looked and looked and looked into all sorts of religions to see if I was on the right path. Many faiths had their arguments, but Christianity continued to make the most sense to me logically, historically.
But that just wasn't enough for me. I also needed a faith that touched me personally. I felt as if a relationship had been broken, that I was broken. I felt dirty--I knew that I was a nice person, but I felt like I was always pushing myself harder, you know? I needed to know how much God loves me--and how much he loves the hurting world around me. It seemed like all other faiths had a category of untouchables...or they claimed the world wasn't really that bad, that somehow we could do it on our own. And I knew I could not.
I needed God close to me, in my life. And Christ invited me to that.

I am christian. now i havent "studied" any other religions, but i have tried my life without any religion. and i have found that there is one thing i cannot live without. his name is Jesus. he died so we could live. when we accept him and love him we are saved. personally i dont like the word religion. religion is a list of rules and acts you have to follow, and i dont know about you, but that doesnt works for me. but christianity is different. its about having a relationship with God, not following rules, because we all sin. so if we had to follow rules, none of us would be going to heaven. only the grace of God can save us. I have found that in my life i have screwed up so many times that it isnt logical. i shouldnt be able to go to heaven, i am a sinner. but God loves us so much that he sent his son to die. Jesus was then raised from the dead to show that he conquered death. He died so we dont have to. the amount of love shown through that is enough evidence for me.
