I think they get really bored just swimming in a circle or back and forth with no stimulation, which is why they tend to sit still a lot of the time. I'd put a plant in there to at least give him something to nibble on and rub up against if he gets an itch (who knows if fish need to scratch... I just threw that in) ;o).

Plant help keep your water cleaner and provide oxygen for your Betta. Although the amazon sword plant is of the best plants for Betta, they can grow big so may not be suited to a bowl.
Also, a peace lily or (small) floating philodendron would work.
See this website for some specific info on plants for your betta setup:

Hillary planting questions on a 'CNN' debate reminds me of Nixon breaking into Watergate when he already had the election won. WHY? CNN is going to sieve through the YouTube soup until they find something that is going to make every Republican look bad and become fodder for the Hillary talking point list she can use in the general election. Why in the world would she take a risk such as this? Her arrogance is showing.

If you do put a plant in his bowl, like many are suggesting, you 'are' going to have to feed him still.
I would suggest doing some research first before doing such, and understand how this would affect your fish. Betta fish eat meal worms and shrimp, not roots. Plant roots should not be the only food source of a meat-eating Betta. x.X
You might end up with a Betta's death before too long.

Definitely! A beta's natural habitat is usually in small puddles or still standing water in rice paddies in places like Thailand (LOTS OF PLANTS).Betas feel safe when they have a plant to retreat to and hide. You should most definitely do this!
The water they naturally live in is also warm!

Buy a plant, not a fake one,a real one to put on top of his bowl. Then you wont have to feed him. I have seen lots of people doing it and they say it works great!
