My car makes a popping noise when accelerating.?

I have a 99 ford escort. When I come to a complete stop and then accelerate againg it makes a popping noise then I give it a little more gas and it does it again. The car drives like a champ. But this noise is starting to get pretty loud. It isn't backfireing, I thought it might be a broken motor mount, but the motor doesnt move all over the place or wabble or anything when I give it gas. The sound is hard to explain but I did my best. Anyone know what this might be, is it really that bad to drive with it doing this?

There may be a hole in the exhaust, making a pock, pock, pock sound. This condition would be louder under acceleration.

it could be the fuel injector o-rings need replaced my dodge was doing same thing i changed all the injectors but belive it was just the o-rings if your engine has lots of miles it could be o-rings check repair manuel to see when they should be changed if cars is over 100,000 miles i would change the injectors also there is a way to check them i purchased mine on e-bay auto parts stores wanted like 80 bucks a piece for 6 is pretty expensive i found some on e-bay offerd the guy 25 a piece if i purchased all 6 he went for it now my truck runs great if you change them yourself you must lubricate the o-ring with oil before incerting back into the engine also make sure engine is cool and car has sat for awhile so pressure drops in fuel rail if your not mechanically inclined pay someone to do them because they have to be seated just rite into position if they arenot you could damage o-ring or injector becareful if you purchase from e-bay there are sellers selling refurbished injectors i tryed them they didnt work for my truck i lost money cause i payed for the shipping then had to return them so make sure u get new good luck ps could even be a vacumm leak some were check all your carb lines listen for loud sucking sounds if found fix or replace hose how i checked my injector o-rings was took a can of startyer fluid and sprayed each one while the engine was running when the engine reved up i new which injector 0-ring was the bad one you can try the same thing also spray around the throttle body and hoses if engine speed changes probably the vacumm leak dont spray into trottle body engine will rev if you spray into or on air filter there are many things it could be sounds travel threw cars so try and pin piont were the noice is comming from usually if it is a fuel injector problem it will be a constant pop if you accelerate hard on the gas try holding brake and hit gas at same time to see if it pops alot its called power braking make sure you step down hard or car will nugg forward or possible for rear tires to spin and smoke make sure no obsticales are in front of your car you shouldnt need to hold the gas peddle down to long for the popin to start if thats the problem if not then its probably not a fuel problem

Take it to a mechanic, you do not want a small problem to become a big one.

sounds like it might be your Catullus converter not firing proper, or it it might be your fuel or air mixture or both but I would check those first, it could due harm to your muffler but other than building up carbon in your engine it won't hurt it, take it to get it tested, it won't cost much, then you can fix it yourself, and you timing check your timing belt, it could do major harm if it is!!!!!!!!!!
