There were two types of US silver dollars made in 1921, the Morgan dollar and the Peace dollar.
The Morgan was the last of its type, revived with a reworked design in 1921, production having been suspended since 1904.
The Peace dollar was a new design. In 1921, its first year, it was struck in high relief. Beautiful to look at... but they didn't stack well. In 1922 the Peace dollar design was revised to produce a lower relief coin which remained in production through 1935.
Even in "dug up" condition the 1921 Peace dollar will be worth considerably more than the Morgan.
IMPORTANT: Tell your friend not to clean the coin. Just wash the dirt off of it in a clear stream of water. Collectors do not like coins that have been cleaned or polished.
