Whatever has happened to the reputation of Constant Lambert, or to Aaron Copeland?

As a youngster, wondering why the USA was so sparsely represented when the nationality of great 20th Century composers was mentioned, I imagined that these two would help to redress the balance somewhat. Only recently I wondered why there is so little veneration of them, and guiltily rebuked myself for losing touch with two composers I admired as a youngster.

Update:

EDIT I suspect that I cannot even spell Copland's name? Is there an 'e'?

Update 2:

Secondly, I always assumed Lambert to be an American. (Ulp!)

Update 3:

In my experience, Copland is largely ignored outside his own country. I really hope that I am wrong here, as well!

I think Copland's reputation is alive and well, although there are many of his works that are still not well known. Constant Lambert was one of the most prodigious talents the world has ever seen but even in his home country of England, he is still largely known only through 'The Rio Grande'. He was a prolific composer during the first part of his short life (2 days short of 46 years) but, having considered himself something of a failure as a composer, concentrated on conducting from around 1935. Lambert was well in touch with modern artistic movements, including jazz and his music rewards the curious listener.

  • Well, I adore Copland. He is one of the people who made me like classical, starting some 40 years ago.
