When feeding your baby, do you give the bottle or the cereal first?

My 6 month old son eats cereal and fruits/vegetables. I go back and forth deciding if I should give him his bottle or his food first. I don't think I could go back and forth because he would not be happy to have the bottle taken away from him. He likes to eat. :-)

If I give him his food first he's a little difficult and wiggly because he wants it faster I think, but I think he would want to have the bottle last so that he can drink after he eats. If I give him his bottle first he seems to be calmer when eating his food.

There is no right answer I'm sure....just curious about what you do and your opinion.

I give my 6 month old son his bottle first b/c I feel that nutritionally its more important right now. After he finishes that then he gets cereal and fruit. I feel like he spits up less when we do it this way too. I had tried it the other way at first simply b/c I didn't know any better and he would drink very little of his bottle then spit up a lot.

at 6 months, you should be making sure that he is drinking his formula first, because that is more important. i also have a 6 month old. he wakes up around 7 and drinks his bottle. around 8:30 i give him his cereal and fruit. then he sleeps until about 10:30-11. he drinks his second bottle then. about an hour and a half later, i give him lunch(fruit and veggie). then he takes another nap from about 1:30-3. he drinks another bottle at 3. eats dinner (rice cereal and veggie) around 5:30. sometimes he will sleep after that for about 30-40 min. then he drinks his last bottle around 7-7:30 and goes to bed at 8. this is what works for us. maybe this wouldn't work for you. every baby is different. just dont let anyone tell you that you are doing it wrong...it's your baby and as long as you are making sure that he is healthy, you do what you want!

As long as your baby continues to eat 20-32oz of formula per day the order is unimportant.

There is also no real reason to do both at the same time.

You can easily bottle feed a full bottle and then 1-2 hours later offer solids when the baby isn't starving and isn't ready for another bottle but is hungry enough to give solids a try.

I had asked my Ped. the same thing, because I figured with all that food...the baby wouldn't be hungry enough afterwards for a bottle. so she told me to go along like this., now it may be a bit different for you depending on when your baby goes to bed and wakes up, and if you have a schedule or not..but my baby's schedule ended up being as follows

she wakes up at 6 am and has a 6-8oz bottle (but as long as she takes 4 oz Its fine, but no less than 4)

8am: breakfast of cereal and fruit (she eats about 1/2 to 3/4s a cup of food)

10am: 6-8 oz bottle, and she takes a nap till about 12, sometimes 1.

12pm or 1pm: lunch, again about 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup

3pm or 4pm, depending on when she woke up from her last nap. she gets another bottle, followed by her last nap ( I never let her sleep past 5pm)

7pm dinner usually about 3/4 cup of food

9 pm last bottle, and then she goes to bed.

at all her meals I give her a sippy cup, well, actually..its one of the spill proof straw cups, she likes those better. she doesn't like Juice, so I give her water.

I give my son 1 or 2 oz of his bottle first, then his cereal with 2 oz from the bottle, and then after hes finished with that and if he's still hungry, the last 2 oz of his bottle.

When he wakes up, give him a bottle... maybe not a full bottle. After an hour or two, feed him breakfast. A couple hours after that, he'll want another bottle. A couple hours after that it'll be lunch time.

Just stagger the cereal and the bottles.

Always give bottle first. At 6 months the baby needs the fat and other nutrients from the formula or breastmilk more than he needs the solid foods.

We do food then breast. He seems not to eat all his food otherwise, and he still drinks the same amount. I DO know what you mean about getting a wiggly baby to sit still. ;o)

bottle first. It's more important; has more nutrients.
