Dumb question about 4 week old...?

Okay, I know this is a dumb question, I guess I just want reassurance because my husband said it's normal... I have a 4 week old (will be 5 wks on Thursday). He spends MOST of his time sleeping...he eats about every 3-4 (sometimes longer at night) hours and is awake for a little while, but for the most part, he sleeps. Is it normal? Thanks!

PS - if it is normal, about when do they start staying awake longer? (I know every baby is different, but ballpark)

no question is dumb when you're a new mom! we all need reassurance!

i have two sons. the first one slept quite a bit for the first 7-8 weeks. then he woke up....and stayed up for hours at a time during the day

the second son is now 6 months old and still sleeps a total of 18-20 hours a day! my ped says it's okay and he's growing and developing fine.

enjoy the quiet while you can! my 2 1/2 year old runs non-stop now!

A newborn will sleep about 18 hours a day.

My son will be 6 weeks tomorrow and he still sleeps most of the day. Although, now he has more periods when he is awake....sometimes stretches of 4 hours at a time. But for the first 4 weeks all he did was eat and sleep.

So, don't worry, totally normal. As the weeks go by you will notice that he will start to stay awake more.

    Congrats!

This is normal! My son was barely ever awake for the first three or four months! Somewhere around three to four months babies start being a lot more alert and awake more. My seven month old used to sleep around 20 hours a day, he was pretty much only awake to feed, cry and be rocked back to sleep!

I have a four week old baby too and she sleeps ALL the time!!!! Even when I breast feed her it's hard to keep her awake. She falls asleep after about five minutes of eating. It is normal though! Newborns sleep so much because they are growing. Don't worry about it. Before long your baby will be awake all day and you won't be able to get anything done and you'll miss his days of endless sleeping.

No it's not a dumb question and tell your hubby that it is perfectly normal! Be thankful that you have a good sleeper!!! :-) My daughter is 15 weeks and is only awake for 2 hours at a time. She is extremely alert during those 2 hours and then takes a nap to recharge! No worries...sleep is very important for babies!

    Development 0-6 Weeks

From the moment your baby is born they are developing and changing all the time and very quickly.

Below are signs of your baby’s development throughout their first 0-6 weeks.

*At birth your baby will be able to focus about 20cm. Keep your movements close so that your baby can see what you are doing and start to recognise your face

    .

*Your baby will start to recognise the smell of your breast milk.

*If you place your finger in the palm of their hand they will grasp very tightly.

*Your baby will recognise the sound of your voice as they have spent time in the womb listening to you. Keep talking to your baby, this will help them to know it is you in those first few weeks when their focus is not very good.

*Your baby could be more awake at night than in the day - this will change in time. To help your baby distinguish between night and day keep them in a light environment when they have a day sleep.

*Your baby may be startled and unsettled by sudden or load noises.

*By two weeks babies start to recognise their mummy and daddy.

*Your baby will start to be soothed by repetitive sounds, it is a good idea to have the same music box playing or to sing the same lullaby when putting your baby down to sleep.

*From six weeks to eight weeks your baby will begin to smile.

*From six weeks to eight weeks your baby will start to follow an object with their eyes if it is moved in front of them slowly

I found this in case you need it. But I have 3 kids under the age of 6. Each of my kids were different but, I found that if they slept too much, they were either growing (they grow in their sleep) or they were too relaxed. But being that your baby is only 4 weeks... its possible its normal. When they are that young, they just eat, poop and sleep. I hope this helps. You have nothing to worry about though. If you want your baby to stay awake at times, then unwrap him and then talk to him.

Congrats on your buddle of joy! They are so precious and sweet at that age!

There are no dumb questions! =) Yes, it is very normal. My daughter started staying awake more around 6 weeks, but yes, they are all different so yours could be sooner or later. Good luck and enjoy the extra rest while it lasts! =)

    It's perfectly normal....

My son was exactly the same at that age and still is at 4 months.....

He'll start staying awake longer in his own time..

No baby is a text book baby and they do things in their own time....

it's normal. As he grows he'll spend more time awake. If the sleeping all day bothers you wake him up every two hours so he'll be able to sleep at night.

Totally normal! My six month old son still takes 5-6 naps a day lasting 1.5-2 hours long.
