who do you call to complain about a veterinarian?

i am very unhappy about the way i was treated by a veterinarian. who do i call to complain? is there a special board that regulates this animal doctors? thanks!

Update:

it is not just an issue of her being rude. she was upset that i questioned the meds she gave my dog because she did not explain. she thought i should just do what she said because she was busy and didnt have time to explain. oh and she blamed us for being in a hurry after she told us she wasnt done and we went back into the room and then she came back and left again and told us bye.she then sent her receptionist in with all this medicine for issues we did not even understand. two medicines for the same worms, medicine for the runs he does not have, when i called this morning to see if i had given him too much medicine she treated me like a piece of garbage because i did not want to just trust whoever answered the phone. then she told me i had no right to be upset because she had not done anything wrong....well im sorry but i dont just do what im told by some vet i had never even met before and with my very expensive and very loved newfoundland puppy.

If you're in the US, the state veterinary board. Google your state goverment with "state veterinarian"

Vets (and people-doctors, too) are human. The vast majority of them are kind, patient and caring, but a few here and there are cold and business like, and yes, maybe even rude.

That behavior you experienced is a red flag to switch vets.

Of course maybe she was having a "bad day", that's also possible too. Being human she may be under stress or have family problems, etc.

And.... not to place all the blame on you... BUT... is it possible YOUR behavior was less than patient as well?

I've worked in vets offices before (retired vet tech) and many people feel that their pet is THE only pet in the world that's special, expensive, and needs attention the second they walk through the door until the second they walk out. Everything else around them should cease!

Well unless you are willing to start fresh with this vet, and give her another shot at it, switch vets and find someone nicer and kinder who takes more time explaining things like meds, etc.

By the way, it is common practice that the receptionist or desk person gives you the meds that the doctor wrote on the chart. That's just the way it's done in almost all offices.

It may be the RECEPTIONIST who screwed up, not the vet...

It was up to her to explain what the meds were for and how to use them.

Every state as a state board of veterinary medicine. You can usually go online to your state board and download a complaint form.

    Keep these things in mind:

1.) You may have to pay a fee to file the complaint.

2.) Unless you can prove negilgence, there is little the board can do but keep the complaint on file.

3.) Find another vet. Personailities are different, find a vet you trust and get along with and move on. Knowing full well that you will have your say, but that nothing will be done.

There is nothing illegal about a vet being or seeming to be rude.

The only issues that may be addressed, is if s/he committed a willful or negligent malpractice that harmed your pet, or physically threatened you, or sexually harassed you. Other than that..if s/he was just rude or unprofessional..you only have the right to switch vets. A vet has no obligation to be a 'nice' person..

Each state has a board, so just google for the board in your state.

This was a good question. I was hoping to find an answer here too as I am going through the same thing. I wish there really was a place you could do something about this epidemic of bad vets.

I'm sure there is a board, as there is with any Dr. - the best way to complain is take your business elsewhere, and then tell everyone you know of your experience.

I would suggest calling your state veterinary association and speaking with them. They would be able to point you in the right direction.
