What is the human equivalent to Rimadyl-Novox?
What is the human equivalent to Rimadyl-Novox?
My dog is on Novox but I would like to know what the human version of this medicine would be. It is cheaper for me to get human prescription then dog prescriptions. Any help would be great. Thank You
I know THAT NOVOX IS NOT a human drug that is why I am asking for the alternative. DOGS can take human antibiotics my dog has been prescribed amoxicillin or the equivalent tons of times.
My co-pay is only $2.00 much cheaper
Thank you to all that have answered. Just to let everyone know, before I give my DOG anything his doctor (vet) will know and I will ask him. I just wanted to have some idea of what is out there in order to ask the right questions to the vet.

Aleasha is incorrect.
The generic human form of a (this) anti-inflammatory is Meloxicam, also known as the brand name of Mobicox. This is used as off-label use in dogs, and used as a prescribed medication in humans to control arthritic pain. The brand-name form for dogs is Metacam.
ADD: Thank you Nekkid for making that clear. Carprofen is no longer being made for human use, that is why I suggested Meloxicam/Mobicox. I am not claiming that they are of the same product, this I am well-aware of, but it is another anti-inflammatory that this poster can use, and can still get perscribed, and still save money.
On the contrary, Meloxicam IS used in veterinary practices under that very name. It is an affordable alternative to Metacam but the same drug; a 100ml/mg bottle of Metacam is approx. $120.00 vs a bottle of Meloxicam (same size) is around $60-80 depending on which pharmacy the vet purchases it from.

Actually the closest to Rimadyl in human medicine would be "tramadol" ~ but for a dog cannot be given in more than 50 mg tablets. In other words you cannot take a human 100 mg tramadol and give to dog unless you are able to figure out the water to pill ratio. Same thing WITH meloxicam. A dog up to 10lbs cannot have more than 1/4 of a "50" mg pill in a 12 hour period of time. Novox is a tramadol "animal only" name patent. It is a money thing because human tramadol is cheap. As well as human meloxicam is very cheap. These are neuro anti inflammatories that work at the pain site where nerve pain also exists. Always use caution when crossing over human to animal ratios because if not enough med pain persists and too much causes liver damage..

I'm sure that your vet would be happy to mail the pills out to you monthly, or even fill them in 6 months quantities for you when you bring the dog in-person. Just call and ask. There is no human equivalent to Rimadyl (carprofen).

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://biturl.im/aU3sZ
The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don't achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren't putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.
The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.
Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

Novox and Rimadyl are also sold under the name Carprofen..
"Carprofen was previously used in human medicine for over 10 years, in doses of 150 to 600 mg per day. It was generally well tolerated, with the majority of adverse effects being transient and mild, such as gastro-intestinal pain and nausea, similar to those recorded with aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
It is no longer marketed for human usage, after apparently being withdrawn on commercial grounds "
There is currently no human equivelant of the drug.

Meloxicam is NOT the same drug
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=200807...
look at the chemical forumulas on the side of the page for both drugs..they are both different. They are both NSAIDS, but many drugs are under this class.
Meloxicam is used in veterinary use under another name, but its NOT a generic of Rimadyl or Novox. If you want to try a different anti inflamitory, discuss this with your vet.

Tramadol is an opiod agonist - not even the same class of chemical as Rimadyl. The mechanism of action of Carprofen, or Rimadyl, is to reduce inflammation; which in and of itself reduces pain. The sole purpose of Tramadol is to mask pain and it does absolutely nothing to slow a degenerative inflammatory disorder, like osteoarthritis, in canines or humans.
We all love our animals; as an MD I d caution all of you to ignore pharmaceutical advice given by individuals who don t have the education or experience necessary to guide you through an informed decision making process.

Meloxicam can cause G.I. tract irritation in humans, and must be dosed and taken carefully, with plenty of fluids. i would rather give a dog aspirin than Meloxicam, as I find meloxicam tears up my stomach after about 3 days of usage. Err on the side of caution.
