Should Michelle Wie be banned from men's tournaments?

If Wie has proven herself on the women's tour to the extent she deserves an opportunity to compete on an admittedly more prestige level against the men that's fine. But she has been a failure in the LPGA.

Or if she qualifies for a PGA event by doing well enough in a qualifying round which is the same for the men who aren't high enough ranked.

I can't believe the PGA is going to allow this mockery of the game to continue to go on for much longer. It is not fair to the game. It is not fair to other golfers both men and women. And frankly it isn't fair to Michelle Wie who sadly has been allowed to squander her talent in fruitless exhibitions to satisfy whether hers but more probably someone else's misguided commerical greed

Update:

Leafsfan:I have to agree with you. But this is why the golf authorities have to impose some minimum standards as to who gets these sponsor exempt invitations. Look Notre Dame last season I almost guarantee it if the NCAA bowl selection rules didn't prohibit it would have played in some lower tier bowl game. 3-9 on the season wouldn't have stopped some Weedeater Bowl for inviting them. But at least the Irish have some history on their side Wie has absolutely none

Update 2:

2Thumbs: Wie can't play college golf- turning pro a couple of years ago made her ineligible. Archaic rule that goes back to the 19th century when the guardians of amateur sports-- college, Olympics wanted to reserve them for the aristocracy and keep the middle and working classes out. Truth is she should be playing college golf and the rule prevents her from doing so if she wanted to should be repealed--it's a relic of the past

Yes, until she gets full-exempt status on one of the pro tours, I think she should be barred from getting PGA sponsor exemptions.

I want the PGA to make a rule that bans any "professional golfer" who does not have status on any tour from getting sponsor invites.

Wie does not have status on even the LPGA. She relies on exemptions to play on the LPGA. For her to suddenly get to play on the PGA is as you say a mockery of pro golf.

Invitations to PGA Tour events should go to PGA members who may not have earned enough money last year to play full-time. These players are still PGA members, Wie isn't.

I think her playing this week opposite a WGC event on the PGA and a LPGA major is a classless, publicity stunt.

  • That you're asking about her, and that she gets attention in the tournaments she enters speaks volumes.

An outright ban? No chance- the tournament directors of the events she's getting into need publicity. If she's not in the Reno-Tahoe event, the media attention is nil (given that you're competing with majors on the senior and LPGA tours, and a WGC event on the PGA Tour). This is why sponsor exemptions exist.

I agree that she's being dragged about by her moronic parents and her sponsors.

Men wouldn't be allowed to play in a women's tournament because that would effectively be "playing down" a level. By allowing women to play up, they are saying that men are "up a level" on the golf course.... So by allowing her to play with the men, she is doing a disservice to her sisters in the golf game.

Also, don't you think she should try and win against the women before she tries against the men? What's next, she'll go play collegiate...oh wait, that's where she should be right now anyways!!!
