There are two methods for viewing a solar eclipse: 1) direct 2) indirect (or by projection) Using the direct method, you must utilize protection for your eye in the manner of: 1) Mylar solar film or glass filters, by companies such as Baader of Germany, Thousand Oaks, Celestron, etc. 2) Hydrogen Alpha telescopes by companies such as Coronado/Meade 3) Number 14 welder's glass. The glass must provide full eye protection, and not just a piece, where damage to the other eye can occur due to non-coverage of the other eye. Projection can be carried out by a pin-hole "camera" and projection on a piece of paper or white cardboard. You can also use binoculars or a low-power telescope (refractor type) to carry out projection viewing. NEVER LOOK directly through a telescope unless it is MADE FOR SOLAR observation, like the Coronado PST, or the telescope has proper mylar or glass filters WELL FASTENED over the objective end (the end opposite the eyepiece). NEVER USE solar eyepiece filters, which use to be made for placing over the eyepiece end, or screwing into the eyepiece threads, these can crack and shatter due to heat build-up, and the results would be permanent blindness. Contrary to what others may have told you.. A tiny pin-hole in mylar film will NOT cause blindness. Here's why... "Tiny wrinkles, folds and pinholes in the filter are normal and do not effect the image quality or safety of the filter. Pinholes up to 1mm square, even at full intensity, work as a camera obscura, which means each pinhole would project its own solar image just like eyepiece projection. If there were 30-50 of the 1/2mm pinholes the contrast would suffer markedly, but it would not cause any eye damage. These mylar filters for the telescope are the same material the mylar glasses are made from. Always look for ones that have another strong component added to the film, to resist pokes and tears.
