What is the best Halloween *treat* to give trick-or-treaters?
My husband and I are purchasing our first home this month. We are excited for Hallowee as we love the holliday and we've not had ANY trick-or-treaters the last few years at our apartments.
I want to give a GREAT treat this year... But I don't want to look like I'm trying to show off by upstaging the neighbors.
I don't know how many trick-or-treaters to expect, but I'm wanting to keep my cost around $.50-$1.00 per kid I think.

Get those BIG candies, you know, like the giant Milky Ways or Crunches or Hersheys. Kids LOVE those. And they tell their friends. Brag to their friends actually...
"Hey Smithy! Look at this giant Snickers! It's huge!"
"Woah! Where'd you get THAT?"
"At that yellow house on Main Street, the one with the pumpkin out front"...

We have found that the most popular thing that we have ever given away is cold drinks: cans of soda for the older kids, and juice boxes for the younger ones. The kids are often very excited about it, and some will stop to take a drink break in the driveway -- especially if the night is a little warm and their costumes are hot and stuffy. We give them to the parents, too, who don't usually want candy but are often happy to have a drink.
Sometimes we've had repeat customers come by an hour or two later because they're thirsty again after their long walk :-)
On years when we have had extra time, we have made paper labels for the soda cans. We labeled it "Witch's Brew", and had an ingredient list that included stuff like "eye of newt" and "tongue of frog". It takes a long time to tape all those labels on 8 dozen cans, though.
(When we did this for the second year, we heard many kids happily yelling to their friends "Woohoo!! It's the Witch's Brew again!!")

Money. You could give a kid the best candy you can find but I bet they'll REALLY love you if you just hand out $1 bills instead.

You could have king sized candy bars, and if the kids trick your or tell a good joke etc. They could get that one but if not you could get something like caramel apples etc.

give out the kind of candy you would like to eat and you should be fine.
just get a general bag of candy and have enough just in case.
