how do i correctly set up firewalls?

I couldn't get on line so i called tech support and he checked to see what was going on and apparently it was all about my firewalls but only my Nortons firewall was on, so when i turned that off my internet worked again....however the tech guy was going to tell me how to set up my firewalls correctly (which if all you do is turn on and off that doesn't make since) then my phone hung up...so now i have no firewall protection....do i need it and if so what do i do? just turn them back on?

Update:

I have a windows xp media center 2005.... i thought they said this came with a firewall installed..... dp you need to make sure all firewalls are on or just certain ones? or none at all?

The best thing to do is put your computer behind a router, it provides a hardware barrier against unwanted intrusions. If you're paranoid run a firewall like comodo, it's free and easy to configure. I'm a linux user so security isn't as much of an issue as with windows users where your operating system is basically wide open to attack by design.

If u would format ur computer than absolutely ur problem will be solved.

First of all u must copy all ur imp data or files in another partition(except drive C). Then format drive C, when ur computer boots up than install antivirus than go to Control Panel. Activate ur firewalls and ur system will work efficiently again.

Else u can mail to me on hiba_kakul@yahoo.com.
