At Saratoga race track this past week.....
they had a 2 horse entry 1 & 1A in the first race. The 1A bolted at the gate and they scratched him, leaving the # 1 horse to run against the rest of the field. The # 1 horse went on to win, he ended up winning the 1st place purse money. But didn't figure in the para-mutual payoffs, why? All tickets on the # 1 were refunded

In the state of New York if one half of an entry scratches after the horses leave the paddock the other half runs for purse money only. As far as I know the State of New York is the only one to have this rule. Everywhere is in the USA if part of an entry scratches you are stuck with the other part. Obvious Bjw has never played horses in New York before or he would know about this rule. I only have 25 years as a horseplayer to tap knowledge from.

Both horses were coupled as an entry.. if one half scratches, then technically for wagering purposes, the whole entry is scratched, but the horse itself runs for purse money only..
