You mention that you are good at writing but have no idea what to write about, right? Okay, are you on a writer's block. While we cant really tell you what to write about ,that needs to come from the inside. (You need to think about it :) Think about what genres you like. What is the best flowing genre for your writing technique? What I mean is: is it easier for you to write mystery, romance, thriller, horror, action, comedy. After you get your genre (which are very intertaining to combine as well) decide your topic. Choose something that is going to satisfy you and your readers, but most importantly yourself. Choose something that you are passionate about so you can really descibe everything in detail and make the reader that they are right there in the book as a character. Writers block is different for everyone. Some writers can be on it for a mere half an hour while writing, others will take many months, possibly years or decades. There are many techniques to help think of ideas and overcome writer's block.

A few that work very well:

    1. Sleep, and keep a dream journal, interpret your dreams, as you will get very good ideas and then you are clear, in an sedative state that you can think clearly.

    2. Meditate on your thoughts. What kind of story do you want to write? Think about it, ask yourself questions.

    3. Travel, even if its just downtown. Inspiration can be enlightened through any event. Again, picture things, read a lot, listen to people talking, anything to get you inspired.

    4. Get inspired. There is always something that gets every writer inspired to write. For some, it is they have a lot of time on their hands to think. Others, it comes from painting, meditation, being creative. My inspiration comes from being upset, or angry. Its odd, I know, but, it gets me in the mood to spill frustration and passion into my words.

Although I didnt give you any plot details, I hope that I inspired you a little bit to develop techniques for bumps in the road, and possibly how to come up with a storyline.

    Best wishes

I studied writing and editing, and found that, while I was studying, my brain was at its most active when it came to thinking of ideas and getting them down.

I would recommend getting together with like-minded people and throwing some ideas around. Also, I took a lot of ideas from my dreams. Writing out the dreams themselves doesn't really work, but I took ideas and little slices of inspiration from my dreams.

Every now and then, I also make myself sit down in front of my computer and start writing the first thing that comes to mind. I have written some amazing short stories that way.

If you are looking for an idea for a longer story, say a novel, you might need to be a bit more methodical about it.

Also, writing someone else's story is not a great idea either. Asking for a plot, beginning and end then just picking it up is a lot harder than it sounds. It has to be something you are at least a little bit knowledgeable about. That whole 'write what you know' has a basis in truth.

These helped me, I hope they help you.

PS If you are looking for a genre, perhaps you need something with strict conventions, such as romance or true crime, rather than something a little looser, such as speculative fiction or fantasy. This will help reign in your idea.

PPS Re: the 'mean comments' thing: if you can't take criticism, you will never make it as a writer.

Several suggestions. Go to writersdigest.com They've been around for almost a century helping writers in various genres and through all kinds of problems. Subscribe to their magazine. It's excellent. Every month they write about a different topic and the stories are always helpful. Second, hang out at local cafe's. Listen in on people's conversations. Write down quotes from books that you think you could use in the future. There are some excellent software programs for writers. I'd call them something like "cheat sheets". A really good software for writing fiction will have different scenarios for plots, give you characteristics of the main people, etc. You can probably find those on writersdigest.com as well.

Good luck and put your vivid imagination to good use.

You know you really are not very fair. Constructing a plot is very hard work and makes a huge part of what writing is about.

Your like a musician who wants to take all fame and glory, although you only sing but don't write the song or the music. singers can almost always be replaced, but the music is what counts.

If you have problems writing a plot try to use things that happen in your life. I started writing storys about dead people. Scary, I know. I went to graveyards and Would look at the stone-inscriptions. When people where born, when they died what the words on the stone were, did someone bring flowers. Than I would make up a story about their life.

Also, I once interpreted someones life. A boy from my school. I tried to imagine why he was so violent and agressive and bullied everyone. He wore brand clothing and was very handsome but somehow he was not 'Mr Popular'.One day he went into hospital with severe injuries.

I made up a story about him.

If you can't think fo something, borrow it from your surroundings.

PS: I don't think tis is for yourself to decide if you are talented.

"sorry but unless you can come up with all that stuff on your own your not that talented at writing, a writer is defined by what they can come up with and for it into something excellent"

"You aren't very talented if u cant think of wat to right. if u r asking total strangers to write ur story for u, then u are not a writer. a true writer can think of their story themselfs. Geez, u really need an imagination, cuz with out one u will never be able to be a true writer."

Okay, first of all, someone can be a talented writer and still get ideas elsewhere. Every single writer does that--ask any of them, including myself. That's the point in writing. Taking life experiences and things you hear and see and making it your own. Someone can be a good writer and still not know what to write. That's called writers block.

lol, i have the same problems dude. When i get the main idea, the whole thing turns out awesome, but yah. What i suggest is read some books you like. Think about how the plot turned out, and all that stuff, and try to apply it to a whole new idea. Don't take it as "copying", but don't copy the whole style itself. Once you got a main idea, start writing at your own style and pace. I'm trying that for myself :) I hope it works, lol, tell me if it does! Hope this helps.

There are several ways to decide what to write about. You could think about the books you'e read, you could just start to pay really close attention to everything for inspiration, but one thing you really should do is just write. It doesn't matter, just do omething like one descriptive paragraph or something a day. And also make sure it's something you want to write about, not what someone else tells you, unless you want to write about that too.

I'd have to agree, if you cannot come up with your own ideas, then your talent is limited.

A true talented writer needs imagination, and the ability to develop their own plots. It is fine to ask people for ideas but you can't ask anyone to come up with an entire plot for you.

You could try listening to music, watching films, TV, and reading as many books as possible to come up with subjects, twists and settings for something you want to make your own.

But chances are, if there is something you want to read about and you write it, other people will want to read it too.

That's weird...because I'm good at plotting, but not the actual writing part. The best way is to think of where your character is going...then where he starts...where he gets the rug pilled out from him...and how he finally beats all odds and accomplishes his task.
