Probably a little of both stories were told and enhanced and facts got distorted to sound better or worse.

I think it's both...there's a lot of historical information and some good advice, but then again there's a lot of information that's just ridiculous - see Leviticus for example.
A large part of the Bible is also based on other (older) religions - basically the book was edited and created to suit the church at the time it was printed. Even omitting other Gospels to suit the politics of the day.
But there's a lot of things in the Bible that I would wish that most Christians will follow - but sadly - still today, people interpret the Bible to suit themselves and then conveniently "forget" other parts.

fact. You ask a query with constrained area and then desire data to help. how many data do you have time and area for? in the beginning, the Bible has been used for geographic accuracy. 2nd, it relatively is been used for archaeological accuracy. 0.33, it relatively is been used for historic accuracy. The Bible suggested the earth grew to become into around approximately 700BC in the previous astronomers knew it. Many have questioned the Bible at cases although those questions blow away. occasion, scientists questioned whether the Hittites have been a actual people who have been suggested in the Bible until archaeologists chanced on photos and inscriptions at some web pages. The Bible has survived many tries at burying it or destroying it. i.e. the Romans, the Catholic Church, purges, and severe persecution of its adherents. The Romans have been nicely-time-honored for their tortures for 315 years yet Christianity based on the Bible grew besides! i visit advise 5 outstanding books that answer this authoritatively in the source area. That technological understanding is suggested as Apologetics. this could be an excellent, substantial question -demands an excellent answer.

The bible was withheld from the public until the time of the crusades, due to the church starting to lose its strangle hold on people as they began to go back to the 'old' ways....that of Druidism and the old witch crone.
The fact that the bible is not complete and there are about a dozen or so 'gospels' that are missing from it because they don't fit in with the Church's mission in controlling the masses, kind of leaves me wondering about the authenticity of it.
I do believe that people take the bible far too literally...you should never base your life solely on what you read in a book...far too many become mindless zealots, that spout biblical prose about God being the only true judge, while they go about condemning people who don't follow the writings of a book that I believe to be a parable at best...
God didn't write the bible...people did. It is not the word of God or Jesus. It is the word of people who wrote things about a person who was at the time a teacher and politician and that Peter, the founder of the Catholic Church, was what amounts to a lawyer.

to me its fiction to others its fact,
I think its a book of parables and morals that are to teach the then uneducated how to live and how to be better people,
it just got wrongly labeled and then put on the wrong shelve.
As to why the believers defend themselves, hmmm,
well firstly they believe, so good luck to them on that,
secondly its a very wealthy church that that defends that bible.
Now if the church was to sell off assets, release cash,
feed and clothe the poor and educate them, then yes I would be less skeptical about those that believe what they read in the bible.
I try to lead by example, I think others should do the same,
that includes answering a question like this honestly, without being afraid of thumbs down, after all were talking mortal souls not just thumbs.
If you take a young child and educate them in a religious manor, then they grow up believing what they are taught, skeptics would say brainwashing or even fanaticism, used wrongly we have all seen the effects of that.
I see wonders around me all the time, but I do not call them miracles,
if I did conscider them miracles do I have to attribute them to the god in the bible, would be a shame to spent a life worshiping the wrong God and then have to die to find out, I was wrong.
I see it also that if the bibles God exists he will understand why I am like I am and believe what I believe, and with that understanding, that only God is meant to have, he will not punish or chastise me, but look to himself to see what mistakes he made.
The day God and I meet, he too will have questions to answer, and if he is the one from the bible, I expect him to explain, one hell of a lot.

Why not both? There are probably places of fact (like a plague of locusts, it's happened a few times in history) and places of fiction (like Job, or Mark and Matthew contradicting the other in several places).
