How do you discipline puppies?

I got two new puppies about 2 weeks old. They fight a lot. Well, one keeps bullying the other. How do you tell the bully to stop what his doing?

Yelling surely doesn't work, I've tried it already.

First time taking care of puppies.

Update:

Not with their mother.

Update 2:

or maybe less than 3 weeks, but pretty sure not a month old. I really cant return them to their mother. No clue what the exact date when they were born.

First of all your puppies are not fighting they are playing with each other but if you thing thier "fighting" gets a little too much try making a loud noise and walk out of the room. Most of the time the puppies will be distracted and will follow you outside the room. Never pull the dog by it's back legs when its fighting it could hurt your dog. Try distracting your dog with toys and treats when they fight. Seperating them will also help. Also praise them for good behavior. Never yell at your puppies they will be scared of you. Aren't they bit too young to be away from their mom and other sibilings. You should also wait a little longer to discipline them . Eight weeks would be old enough to train your puppies. Let them have fun till then.

Try these site for disciplining your dog.

2 weeks? That seems a bit dubious. At two weeks most puppies are just beginning topen their eyes and hear, they can't maintain their own body heat, and they are still fairly unstead on their paws. The pups should be with their mother at this point (except, of course, in those unfortunate cases where the mother has died in birth and humans have to step in). Most importantly, 2 week old puppies can't and shouldn't be disciplined. They are too young to learn.

At about 3-4 weeks the puppies should start exploring their world, but stress during this period (such as from discipline) can effect their mental state for life.

At 5-7 weeks the puppies are finally ready to learn what it means to be a dog. Ideally, the puppies are around a lot of other dogs. Wrestling during this stage is perfectly fine, as the dogs are learning how to interact with other dogs (and fighting is part of it).

After that, you might be able to train them not to fight (if it is still an issue).

At these early stages and beyond, a distraction is usually better for discouraging bad behavior than physical punishment.

I'll assume you meant 2 months old, not 2 weeks. No, yelling doesn't work. Simplest thing to do, is tell him no, and seperate them when he becomes overexcited, until he calms back down and can play nicely.

After that, you just have to realize, they are going to have to work it out amongst themselves, and given an opportunity, they will.

  • well now you have to reverse the damage done by your yelling since yelling just makes them fight more intensely and develops fear aggression.

are they with the mother still (they should be at 2 weeks?!) she should be doing the disciplining...

they need to be with the mother until 8 weeks IDEALLY...weaned off feeding at 5 weeks (i think).

    how are you feeding them?

they're going to develop alot of social problems not with their mom and with you yelling at them! please no more yelling or any physical violence, and can you ask your vet for help?

First, you don't punish puppies any more than you would punish a baby.

Physically separate them, and praise them for behaving.

Then, get a book on how to train dogs and read it twice! Your naivete is cruel to your dogs.
