Should I buy a cabin in Big Bear California
My husband and I want to buy a cabin out their to go when we want to get away and it is only an hour and a half away. We love the mountains and right now the cabins are pretty cheap!

I've got several friends and family members that have places at Big Bear - both year-round and weekenders, and they all love it. It's an awesome place for a weekend getaway, because unlike pretty much anywhere else in the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains, there are lots of things to do at Big Bear - boating, fishing, waterskiing (brrr - but people do), hiking, mountain biking (in the summer, you can take your bike up the chair lift at Snow Summit), extensive jeep and dirt bike trails, skiing in the winter, and the town is big enough to support a number of good restaurants. Also, Big Bear has the best road access of all the local mountain communities. With Hwys 18 (north *and* south) and Hwy 38, you can always get up and down the mountain, no matter what the weather or road conditions. (if you ride a motorcycle, Hwy 38 is a great road - 35 miles of big sweepers, and little traffic)
And because of Big Bear's popularity, if you get a place that's well located, you can easily rent it during both the summer and the winter.

I wouldn't worry about the fires. They'll protect the towns, so usually only a few outlying homes burn. Homes have burned in bigger towns, too. A few years ago lots of homes burned in Oakland, CA.
Buy now while prices are low, then if you get tired of it, sell it when the prices jump back up -- WHICH THEY ALWAYS DO. My in-laws owned a home there for about 7 years and they made a bundle.

More likely than not, all of the cabins have been booked for a long time now - there are several websites; do a Google search :]

And they will be a lot cheaper a year from now. Otherwise, it is a great place to live as long as you don't mind the place getting burned down on average of every 25 years because of wild fires.

I would go for Lake Arrowhead. They're having a "fire sale" there.

Not sure if that's correct
