How to stop my dog from attacking?

Shes a golden and usually veryy mellow but whenever she meets a new dog she sniffs them for a little while then attacks. Maybe its becuase shes afraid of them or shes just protective or something? Shes ok if she knows the dog, if she sees them enough and gets used to them she wont attack. How can I get her not to attack dogs when she first meets them?

Keep her on a leash so when she does you have a hold on her. Some dogs are goofy and dont like other dogs for whatever reasons. I think dogs can be very territorial.

I'm wondering the same thing about my own dog (10 1/2 years old, 25 pound Chow/Shih-tzu mix), BUT I know why she attacks. She usually only attacks a dog/puppy (which are usually the high-energy/dominant dogs) if they have been in her face making eye contact for too long (after about 10 sec.)----for dogs, a direct eye contact is an aggressive move which my dog usually finishes when first meeting another dog. So because I know why she attacks, I usually snap her out of it before she attacks, by saying no in a firm manner and walking away (which I would only do if she is the type of dog that gets territorial over their humans, or a dog that automatically follows their owner when the owner walks away). Also, I take her to a off-leash dog park where she can meet new dogs------she can be leash aggressive, which means when she is on the leash, she gets aggressive with any dog. So once we inside the park, right away I take off her leash so she won't be compelled to get into a fight-----which helps out alot because she doesn't feel the tension of the leash when in there (KEY FACT: When there is tension in the leash, that is a negative energy to dogs, which usually leads them to attack anything at the end of their leash because they figure there must be a reason for the leash to be so tight.)

Also, if when first meeting a dog, your dog and that dog is constantly moving in circles to sniff each other---that can lead to a fight to, because one isn't being submissive to the other by being sniffed first. Sometimes, that little behavior that most people don't catch, is what causes my dog to attack (go after aggressively and tries to pin the other dog to the ground).

This is unusual for a female, unless she is first meeting these dogs on her own turf. If so she is letting them know she is the boss around here.

Females are very protective. If she is doing this anywhere else, a park for instance, she is being over protective over you. Dogs have a way of showing who is boss by putting their head over top the other dogs head if the other dog does not submit this usually starts a fight.

Another thing about females is they do not get along with other females. Usually spaying before breeding helps this problem.

Are you sure she is attacking or just playing? I wish I knew how old she is. Does she growl and bite? Do you have to pull her off? This is a dangerous thing to do. If she is this mean I suggest visiting a real trainer to help with this issue, and in the meantime please keep her away from other dogs, children and any other animal or human she may hurt.

I am glad to see you are being responsible for her. Most people laugh and think it is funny that they own a bully. You didn't say how old she is, she may be acting like a puppy or she may be old and getting miserable with arthritis. Ask your vets opinion, and have him refer you to a good trainer if he thinks this is a real problem.

Best of luck to you and your dog. It wouldn't surprise me, she is just protecting you, but she may need some help on how to re-act in another way. If she is less than a year old she is probably just playing around. Give her lots of love.

  • same with my puppy and he si a golden too. We got him off craigslist and e think he was abused cuz he is afraid of other dogs and people except him and my pekingese are best friends, opposites attract, i don't know what s wrong with him. he is afraid of going near my dad and pees himself when he is scared

Well, when you say attack, do you mean hurting the other dog, or growling and barking? If she is just growling and barking, she's just playing.

  • Try not to let her meet dogs.

Blind fold the dog, then he can't see. so then he won't know where to attack an he'll eventually give up.
