If If it barks at you to leaf it alone, you should twig on pretty quickly that, that's actually the back of the tree.

Unless it's a pu$$y willow of course, in which case, by some quirk of quantum theory, the front is actually located all around the tree. Enjoy.

Trees in their natural state, growing without any restrictions to their natural shapes and sizes, do not have a front or back. However people living in rural areas will often refer to the front of the tree as being that which faces East. This is the side which gets the sun, consequently the opposite side (the back) will be the one which will show the moss growth and other signs of dampness. This is used to get compass directions when you do not have one, or it is an overcast day.

When a tree is planted in front of a house or other structure, the side facing the house or structure is often call the back.

I don't think a tree really has a front or back...
