Neighbour complaining about my dog barking
I have a 14 month old male German Shepherd Dog. He barks during daylight hours. But when he does it is only for moments at a time and its usually for a good reason. The neighbour who made the complaint lives across my street. I have two next door neighbours who have no problems with my dog. I speak with one neighbour a lot and he said when I first moved in the dog barked but that I now have him under control. He said if dog is ever a nuisance he would let me know right away. Anyway after the other witch complained I put a shock collar on the dog. I heard him bark once and then he let out an unmerciful yelp. So the collar is working well. When the witch made the first complaint I was sleeping after night shift. She thumped my door for 10 minutes until I finally got out of bed and answered and she was less than pleasant. That was 2 days ago. I think her husband knocked at my door tonight again. But this time he only pushed my doorbell once. Again I was resting after work. By the time I got to the door no-one was there - I just saw him walking into his home. I dunno if he wanted to complain again, apologise or tell me that things have improved. This has really annoyed me as I hate using the shock collar because I believe she has exagerated the problem greatly. How can I cover myself against malicious or exagerated allegation made by her? And I dont want her knocking at my door ever again as I despise her now. If she persists to pester me I will consider reporting her to Police for harrassment.
Just to add I remove his shock collar during daytime. He will bark if he hears another dog or people walking to close to my home. This is fine by me. Maybe thats what her husband wanted to moan about again? If so I would be well entitled to tell him to **** off if he moans about occassional daytime barking, right?
Err Indoors - you are lucky you are not my neighbour. Weirdo!

She is going to have to make a strong argument that the dog barking is causing an undue nuisance which means she will need audible proof. She then has to hire a lawyer. You are not going to have a lawsuit on your hands but just an annoying neighbor. Just pray she leaves you alone after she finds out she doesn't have a case.

Please take the shock collar and throw it in a bin!!! This is cruelty as the shock is just like using a taser on a human being. Maybe a little mediation could help your situation. Bring your neighbours together and discuss the problem. It may be that the neigbour across from you has sensitive hearing. If so then it is her problem. However, if your next door neighbour has no problems with your dog then you may need to tape your dog over a period of a few hours when you are asleep or ask them to so you can hear the extent of the problem. Dogs are allowed to bark but not incessantly. Try walking him until he tires out before you go to bed. Yes, it sounds cruel to you being tired as well but it will help him to relax too. Also, leave a Kong or other filled treat filler to keep him busy for a couple of hours. If I had to sleep all day due to my dog I'd ask a friend/relative to have him during that time. Good luck with him and don't forget training classed as well. Cathy

I guess you've never been pi$$ed off by the sound of a dog continuously barking then? I have, and it's enough to drive someone stir crazy. Have you ever thought of bringing the dog in the house?
It beats me how people like you can actually sleep through the sound of a big dog barking, yet you probably go off on one when a child is playing noisily. You say it only barks occasionally, but how do you know that if you are asleep?
Like you, I work nights, and a neighbour left his noisy dog in the garden all day to bark. I suffered it for over a year, and then I found a really effective solution to my problem. A windowsill full of small stones, and a catapult. That dog only had to hear the window latch rattle, and it would shoot into it's kennel. Problem sorted!!
I don't leave my dog outside all day to annoy my neighbours, I take him for a 2 hour walk, and he lives indoors. Maybe yours is protesting about being shut outside in all weathers. I know I would!!!

Well I'm partly with your neighbour on this one because the other problem may be that when you're not there your dog *may* be barking constantly and that can drive people mad after a while.
Our neighbour's dog suffers from separation anxiety and when they go out he barks pretty much constantly for the whole time. Like yours, it's usually when he hears something or sees people going past but as much as I'm fond of their dog, the barking really gets to me after a while; partly the noise and partly because I feel sorry for the dog.
As you say, it shouldn't be a problem if your dog only barks occasionally (my dog barks once or twice when the doorbell rings) but there should be a command that you can use to stop him barking rather than using a shock collar which I think is cruel. Maybe you should consider dog training classes.
Unfortunately the law is on your neighbour's side but if they want to make a noise nuisance complaint and take it all the way (to court for example) then they would have to provide evidence. But they do have the right to complain I'm afraid.

You may get reported to the environmental health department and or the local dog warden who will ask the complainant to keep a diary of the noise, if they think there is a sufficient problem they will then place sound equipment in her home to record noise levels, or send an officer to witness the noise, noise during the day is still unlawful if it is causing a statutory noise nuisance. If she has exaggerated then the sound equipment will not pick up any noise so the case will be dropped if on the other hand she has not you may be taken to the magistrates court by the environment health department, if she is harassing you then you need to contact a solicitor in the first instance for advice.
The following link is an example of how councils deal with dog barking complaints,

Yes if they are pestering you than call the police for harrassment. Next time they are knocking at your door, explain to them that you work midnites and are trying to sleep, tell them that you are handling it, but they need to leave you alone or you will call the cops for harrassment.
Obviously you are home.. you should know if your dog is barking or not, if the dog was barking it would wake you up!
They only have right to complain about barking if the dog is barking during certain hours (at nite!)... or if the dog is barking for HOURS at a time. The occasional bark during the day is not something worth complaining about. If they really think its so bad, then they can call the cops.

I look at it like this....if you complain once and it does not stop then it is the same as the neighbors saying **** YOU we have no respect for you. So what to do? Poison! Get a small chunk of hamburger meat and wrap it around some arsinec and throw it into the yard when nobody is watching, then smile and watch that barking dog stop!

... If you work nights and leave your dog out while you sleep...he may be barking continually. You did say it took a while to wake you from sleep...you may not be hearing him.
I have 2 dogs myself....they are only allowed to give warning barks and then are told ...ENOUGH....part of being a responsible pet owner is respecting your neighbors too. My friends/neighbors next door to me, run their air-conditioner so their windows are closed...needless to say...I prefer fresh air and get the full effect of their dog barking at everything it see's....not so nice at 6 or 7am. I would love to report the barking....but I am afraid they would find out it was me....she is already aware that I don't like barking dogs. Shock collar sounds like a really good idea to use when you are not awake or around to correct his behavior.

If the neighbours contact environmental health and they come and take recordings you could have a warning or a hefty fine coming to you. Have you ever lived next to a barking dog? It's enough to drive you mind. The barking is fine with you but your neighbours have a right to piece and quiet in their own home. There's no point calling the police for harassment, as she's within her rights to complain about the noise and hasn't threatened you. They won't do anything.

Get rid of that collar they are totally un necessary and cruel, the sooner they are banned the better! Postitve reward based training is far more productive.
I certainly wouldn't use one on my dogs and not after one complaint.
Your dogs barking will have to be proven as a nuisence, which means it will have to be witnessed by the council,it also has to be consisent over a period of time and go for more than 20 minutes.
Your neighbour will be asked to log times and dates etc.
It may help to teach your dog the quiet command when he responds give him lots of praise and reward,so he is doing something to please rather than out of fear.
