3 Mobile Replacement Sim Card Rip Off

My partner has a 3 sim card, which he has had for around 3 years, having upgraded his phone a few times, and switched the sim between handsets. The sim card is starting to show signs of fair wear and tear, so we rang 3 to ask for a replacement. They told us that the regular cost to replace a sim card is £15 VAT, which is £17.62 altogether. They offered it to us for £5. We argued that, having spent so much money, and given the amount of money spent on the card (it's on contract), along with the fact that 3 years of use would cause fair wear and tear on a sim card, we would have expected no charge for the sim to be replaced. I agree that £5 is not a lot of money, but it's the principle of the thing. We think 3 get enough money out of customers as things are, without chasing money like this. Does anyone have any opinions on the subject?

Update:

I've also found out today that 3 are also putting up their non-direct debit charge from £3 to £4 a month, an increase of 33%. Do 3 want new customers, as well as retaining current ones?

Most places don't normally just sell SIM cards as one is always included with the phone. I personally keep the SIM card when I buy a new phone, and just hold it around for a rainy day. If you lost your phone, wouldn't you need a new phone? If you hadn't lost your phone, you may want to contact T-Mobile and ask them for a new card. I will personally remind them of how long you been a customer, and ask them to waive the $15 charge on the card itself. If you do acquire the SIM card from somewhere else, you would need to contact T-Mobile, and be prepared to give them the numbers in respective of the SIM card, and be prepared to give your IMEI number of the phone you need to use.

this is the problem when you switch sim card around the gold foil wears out, this is why you should not switch them around as often, i had to purchase one for £5 from 3 but my sim was misplaced, its a good price considering that O2 charge £15 orange £15 Tmobile £10

also the fault was not on their side as sim cards do not wear out unless the user has done something to cause this. which in your case the sim was switched aboout hence the reason why 3 sims are only meant to be used in 3 phones.

I'm on 3 and it is the worst network ever. I lived abroad for 6 months and had to use my phone over there and spent well over a grand on it. I now have a 3 mobile that only randomly gets signal and I can't get web on and everytime I ring they say there is nothing they can do. I used to be on o2 and spent a fortune on my phone and they were always offering me fancy upgrades and ringing me to see how they could save me money. 3 are terrible, I agree with you though, you definately shouldn't have to pay. Nothing suprises me with how rubbish 3 are x x x

How much wear and tear can you put on a SIM card? Is it faulty if so it should be replaced free. If not then what does it matter what it looks like its inside the phone.

    Thought about having a '3' handset. That's one reason I didn't!
